Planted in ground.

I finally got rid of several trays of succulents and planted them ground. Sprinklers will do the work of watering them now.

Yay!

Pretty. What happens when they spread? Ours have about doubled from when planted a year ago! Won't sprinklers over water? We had our sprinklers directed away from our succulent island so I now have to spend about 5 minutes every couple of weeks watering the island.

    Very pretty Chris😀!

What do you do with the plants during the winter? Takes commitment to do this in your zone. I give you major props!

gorgeous.. for this moment in time ... i would have probably left them some room to grow.. else you might be renovating the bed pretty fast ..

i also wonder how you are going to deal with the grass edging .. you might have to go old school and do it by hand.. because a weed whip will just cover it all with clippings ...

otherwise.. gods work.. good job ... the whirligig just puts the exclamation point on it all .. lol ...

ps: i also wonder if grass watering.. will be too much for these plants that tend towards liking to be dry ... not irrigated as much as a lawn would ... or i misunderstand that part ...

    Thanks everyone.

Plants will be dug back by late October and will be overwintered in the basement. I am going through a phase right now where I hate seeing pots sitting on my property hence these were planted in ground. I had the urge to declutter my yard. My containers are down to 34 individually potted succulents. God knows how many pots I originally had. I wanted to bring it down to less than 10 but it’s just impossible.

As for the possible growth, here is a less Pinteres-esque view. Note there’s some space between the plants, albeit not much.

Grass edges are maintained using weed whacker and cleaned with a blower in the low setting.

I would have thought daily sprinklers would rot these but I made a similar set up last year to test how much water these can handle and I was surprised none of them rotted. I used Echeveria ‘Hercules’, Echeveria pollux, Graptoveria ’Fred Ives’, Echeveria lola and Sedeveria ’Lilac Mist’ that time with good results.

Could you not have just sunk the pots in the ground?

Hey, Chris (6a in Ma), love your garden. Did you walk Nauset Beach last winter to gather up the stones?

Tsugajunkie, I did sink some 4x4 plastic pots in the 2 urns at the front of my house. But for the bed here, all plants were put directly into the ground. I thought about doing that for convenience sake but I didn’t like the plants sitting in a straight line. LOL.

JudyG I did collect some 20 round stones from Charleston, RI. They were round and big. I was lucky to score several bags from a local garden center that matched the rocks. Bags originally were sold at $15 was priced dropped to $5. I bought 6. I regret not buying the entire pallet. LOL

So, if you replant every year, do you remove all of the rocks and replace them also?

Stunning❣️I had some of those succulents, “hens and chicks”, and boy do they multiply!!

Wow, that’s spectacular. The colors and variety make a very attractive display. You are an artist! Thank you for sharing.

I hear you about too many pots! I doubled up a few plants. Must stop rooting random cuttings.

@nancyjane_gardener, the stones stay where they are. Those are big enough to stay in place. 😀

Wow, this looks amazing! I am impressed by your dedication to giving them a beautiful home in the summer and then digging them up for overwintering. I don't have the skill and dedication you do, but this inspires me to plant some more hen & chicks which remind me a little of your succulents. Very pretty.
