Cutting back daffodil leaves?

Conventional wisdome is to leave daffodils untouched for 6 weeks after they bloom so they can absorb energy to rebloom next year.

Well I don't want ALL of them to return next year because there are way too many all over my gardens. Does it make sense for me to cut down the leaves (stalks?) now instead of waiting for late summer? Wouldn't that mean less spreading and maybe thinner clusters for next year?
