It certainly appears to be a Rose but without seeing a bloom open it would be impossible (for me at least) to name it.

I will have to post back once it blooms. I saw it bloom last year, but never too a photo.

I don't think it had any thorns.

Rosa rugosa of some sort - there are quite a few varieties of them.

The canes visible on the right seem to have thorns. As karin_mt says, there are quite a few varieties of rugosa roses, a popular one with dark pink flowers is "Purple Pavement".

Thanks everyone! I looked up the "Purple Pavement" rugosa rose, and think it is the one. Will know for sure once it blooms.
