A few things I learned:

1. Don't buy faucets or major items from big-box stores. A Kohler faucet sold at Home Depot isn't the same as a Kohler faucet purchased from Kohler (or an authorized vendor). Same with the tubs.

2. Build.com has great prices (it's owned by Ferguson Bath).

3. Get at least 3 bids from contractors. Tell them what you want and watch their reaction. I told one contractor I wanted to use large format tiles and I could tell he wasn't pleased. Most contractors want to get in and out quickly and do basic stuff.

4. Check out the subs. My contractor only used subs for demo and paint. He and his partner did the major work: plumbing, tile & electrical.

5. To save money, I used a designer for the design, but I was the project manager and did all the shopping and coordination with contractor. NEVER AGAIN. Lots of details and decisions to make. LOTS. And I had to do it while working from home during a pandemic. Let the designer do it. They're the pros.

6. If you live in a small condo, I recommend moving out during construction.
