The catch all term would be vernacular. I find it hard to Believe it was built as a duplex, more likely it was converted during the depression or wwII. have you looked at sanborn fire maps of the era ?

This house makes me smile. It's unpretentious, but interesting with the different little rooflines. I like it!

The first thing I would do is rip out that brick entrance thingy. I'd use picket.

I checked out the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps and found some interesting information. First, HALLETT & Co., you were right. The house was originally a single fam. Addition came sometime after 1922. Also, the house was built sometime between 1908 and 1913, not 1925! And the original roof was shingles.

@Gloria Carlson Does that information change your plan for the home? Every time I look at it, I notice another cuteness! Do you have photos of the inside?

Might the original shingles have been slate? Or were they tarpaper? Wood?

Slate would have a different code so my guess is wood shingles. I'm still struggling to understand exactly how the Sanborn maps worked. The house next door was supposedly built in 1897 but our neighborhood was not mapped with Sanborn until 1913. That leaves me wondering if individual homes weren't mapped until the neighborhood was more complete. Which leaves the possibility that my house is even older. @tangerinedoor I'm wondering if there were folk victorian details on the house originally. We have an accepted offer for this house but we do not yet own it.

So the Sanborn company created maps at certain times (in my area 1897, 1913, 1925) which were used for I aura center purposes. At least where I am the official city copy got houses pasted in in the following years until a whole new map was made. Thus the 1913 map you view online shows all structures built up to 1913, but if I go to city hall I can see all the little pasted in bits that show what was built from 1913 until the next map was made. Sometimes these have years written on them but that didn’t really matter to them at the time.
