I Need To Make A Few Deductions

I bought a bunch of BIG hosta 3 yrs ago and now they have overgrown their space. They were so little in 1 gallon pots and now they are huge.

I figure I will pullout every other one and maybe divide them. I worked on the below bed all day today. It had 2 gardenias and 3 azaleas, 3 hydrangeas, bulbs and some miscellaneous hosta that were divided last year. The bushes were planted about 2 yrs ago. The honeysuckle had taken over to some degree. And the wisteria didn't all grow up the trellis so I pulled up the stray vines from the ground and wrapped them around the trellis. I love this American wisteria, it isn't as invasive as the Chinese wisteria that the neighbors have gifted me with. I just need to dig in the bricks once I am happy with the bed shape.

This bed was cleared last week from weeds, grass, C. Wisteria, seedling trees etc. I transplanted 4 oak leaf hydrangeas suckers that were coming up in the edge of the woods last year. 3 of them survived. I plan to put hosta, rooted cuttings of hydrangeas and wild azaleas here this year. There is a row of leland cyprus that we cut all the lower dead limbs from that marks the back property line. The oak leaf hydrangeas are planted between the tree trunks where the black pots are. I used the pots to do a drip irrigation for the plants last summer. The multi trunk tree is a serviceberry. There is a forsythia and a variegated hydrangea planted on either side of the serviceberry.

This is the next bed that needs a lot of work. I had spinal surgery in 2018 and I am finally having enough energy to do more than just pull weeds. It is a jungle in there. I need to clear around the bushes that are growing in the bed and then I can plant some of my edited hosta. I want to put a brick edging around the front if I have enough claimed brick.

You have plenty of room for your excess hostas. The wilderness bed looks like a summer long project. Moving hostas in the fall is safer for the hostas and easier on you. Show us pics when it’s done.

Frankie, just a word of caution.......I don’t know how old you are but I want to give a little advice....... I have had 3 spinal fusions, two hip replacements and multiple other orthopedic surgeries (hands, knees, shoulder). My first fusion was at 30. Second one 15 years later and neck fusion in between. I want to say please be cautious with your back. It’s so easy to feel like Wonder Woman after healing up. If you had a fusion then there is always risk of needing surgery at the next level up. Find out the best way for you to move in the garden without hurting your back. Also, invest in good tools. Get a root slayer, they easily can dig up stuff in your beds without resorting to pulling by hand. I also have a stainless steel spade which is sooooo easy to work with. Slides in and out of the ground as well. Got both on Amazon. Anyway, I probably sound like a grandmother talking to you like this. I’m not, but I am 67 with an awful lot of experience when it comes to backs.

You may know all of this———good, then I just wasted a bit of both of our times. Good luck with the project.
