Stove vs Sink on the newly remodeled Kitchen

Dear community,

We recently remodeled our kitchen and my wife prefers to have stove on kitchen island as it gives a live cooking station feeling that faces the living room.

I am on the other hand having a mixed feeling about it. We cook a lot of Indian cuisine that means a lot curry based dishes that can splash over counter top in the living room while cooking. It could be just a bad feeling and nothing more as we have not tested yet or there could be solutions where there is a on demand backplate goes behind the stove when needed.

dishwasher is next to the the microoven and fridge is on the corner.

your thoughts?

thanks

Rehan

Island hoods are inefficient and expensive. All that grease escaping to live in your home’s surfaces would be pretty gross.

    Agree, no island cook top.

Not a big fan of island cooktops..but to make it a little better make sure the countertop is extra wide.

Your peninsula is way too narrow to put the cooktop there. It's a safety issue for anyone walking by the back side in addition to having splatters all over the floor. Put the cooktop against the wall and move the sink.

I enjoy cooking, and hate doing dishes. My kitchen sink has one of the best views in my house, so it's enjoyable while doing breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes. The stove is just used for dinner, so give the sink the better view. :)

Could put a stove with hood On the same wall as refrigerator. Move dishwasher to opposite side. Leaving peninsula clear for serving etc.

I would suggest if your wife does most cooking, consider best way to make her happy. Could you extend the wall further to make a deeper peninsula where the cooktop would be? On the other hand, if there is no dishwasher in the plan, she will be staring at the wall much longer than she will be at the cooktop, so ask her to consider this sink location too. I prefer to have visitors watch me washing dishes where I can visit rather than while I'm trying to cook. I really enjoy curry dishes and some indian foods, I wish you the best!

If you have the ability to vent the cooktop outdoors, absolutely that wall is where it should go.

Dear community thank you so much for your great feedback. i am really humbled by the response.

Unfortunately it was too late for me to take feedback into account and got the kitchen delivered.

We have the dishwasher next to fridge and the extractor hood is filter based so exhaust out pipe is not needed.

I agree that cooktop island is too narrow and might be safety concerns but now that is what we are stuck with.

I would really appreciate if you have any suggestions on how to improve it from this point?

I have attached the picture of the kitchen in real life. The work is still in progress and kitchen tap needed to be install under the cabinets. Therefore there is a paper sheet on the top but underneath we have induction stove on composite black stone and sockets needed to be installed on the tiles.

    Looking forward for your feedback.

    Thanks

I agree, it's a little late to solicit opinions, your kitchen looks nearly complete. Enjoy your new space, I hope you're happy with the finished product. And... we also have a cooktop on the island - it's a small kitchen & we didn't want to pay $$$ to have the whole space reconfigured when we barely cook. For us, it works just fine.

How to improve a fine deal? Eat out. A recirculating hood in that peninsula is a big issue. Get it vented as a first option. And create a taller bar behind it, maybe with some risers.

As others have said, you'll likely be disappointed with the performance of your recirculating hood. If you can afford it, it will be well worth your while to have a ducted hood installed for better ventilation. It's not that far from an exterior wall and wouldn't be too disruptive. You'll know better after you cook a few meals. Another possibility, which will also be costly because it would require reworking the stone counter, would be the addition of downdraft ventilation but I believe you need a basement or crawlspace. Good luck with you new kitchen. It looks very nice.

Thank you for feedback. Sorry I did not come across as a done deal but your feedback does make sense and when we move to a bigger house, your feedback will impact my future kitchen.

I liked the idea of the raised bar that can also give us extra cabinet on the other side. Another cheap solution to catch the splashes could be an on demand Plexiglass stand easer to clean and removable.

Unfortunately, we have to stuck with this recirculating hood as the outer wall is the main face of the building and restricted to have a vent out. Hopefully three windows in this kitchen + living room could compensate with smell of food in summer time but we have to see how it is on the winter time as it get very cold in Amsterdam.

    Thanks
