What do hostas taste like?

I am curious too as to what they taste like. I have never had them. Nice presentation.

Hosta, what a wonderful plant for the garden. Nothing grows better in shade than hostas.

The shoots come up early in the spring before all the other veggies.

The shoots taste pleasantly mild, tender and not fibery. The flavor is like a cross of asparagus and endive. You can use the shoots in salads or stir fry them.

I think that I've just found a reason to keep my huge, and ever enlarging, Empress Wu hosta. I will have to relocate it though, it is blocking the sidewalk.

dcarch, Your dish is a real work of art.......you must photograph food dishes for a living......if not, you should. Anyway I certainly would try it but not sure I could sacrifice a live hosta for a meal!! Hahaha!

My mother grew hostas, but never cooked them. :) Thanks for the info.

So, I tried them this afternoon, sauteed in butter with some onions and snow peas from the garden over rice. They were okay. Mine didn't look like yours', though. Mine were tiny and some were barely curled with only one layer of leaf. They've been growing back for a while now. Next year will try and catch them as soon as they come out of the ground.
