Refinished area is matte compared to rest of kitchen

I had a company come and refinish our kitchen hardwood floor. It looks beautiful but one small section had really obvious sanding scratches, so I had them come by and do that area again. The spot is about 3 ft x 3 ft. after they fixed the spot, it now has a very matte finish compared to the rest of the kitchen and it sticks out. When I contacted them, they said the finish should look like the rest of the kitchen after some use. It has been about three weeks and the finish is still very matte and you can see the transition in shine.

what I don’t understand is why the rest of the kitchen has one sheen (satin maybe), and that spot they are claiming they used the same sheen, but it is not the same even after three weeks.

have I not given it enough time for it to correct itself or is it more likely they accidentally used the wrong sheen when they back to repair that spot?

the Left side is much shinier than the right side, and both sides were done by the same company within a week of each other.

I think the "shine" you have on older parts is just wear and tear of you and the others in your house walking over the flooring. The newly refinished party is matched to the finishing of your floors, but without the same amount and level of wear and tear so to speak. It will correct over time.

@modpod the shiny part is only 6 days older than the non shiny part. They refinished the whole kitchen and a week later came back to fix one spot. The spot they fixed is not the same.

i don’t know how to make it more clear but basically the whole kitchen was Refinished at the same time. There is only a week difference in the wear between the two sides, and the left side was never a matte finish. It was Instantly correct but the right side is taking time? Even though they did both sides at roughly the same time?

They might have used a old applicator. Cross contaminating the sheens. Post a photo at a different angle. Difficult to tell whether it is lighting or finish glaring.

@G & S Floor Service i just took this picture which intentionally has the light over both the matte and reflective sides. I circled the spot where you can see the light seems disappear on the next board that has a different finish.

I don't see it in the photo. Take a photo at a angle from the floor height.

I can see it...sort of. The colour is good. The gloss level is (for me) a 'meh' event. I know that floors dull down over time. I know it will all look the same in 5 years...which is why I (as a pro and someone who is a Type B personality in her own home) would be willing/happy to accept a discount on the floor rather than ask for the entire kitchen to be recoated (PITA).

@SJ McCarthy i really don’t have a problem with the gloss level of the rest of the kitchen. My problem is with the matte finish of that one small area. Would it be possible to buff it out and apply a glossier sheen so that it matches the rest of the floor? Is it something a handy person could do themselves? The matte area is only about 3 ft by 3 ft.

and I do not want to redo the whole kitchen as I am happy with all of it except this small spot.

You can buff it to a shine. Use a white buffing pad and a random orbital sander.
