I love Aussies, they are my very favorite breed. They are so very intelligent and every one of them I've ever known had an amazing personality. And Hazel is absolutely gorgeous! I'm very happy for both Hazel and your in laws. That's a wonderful thing you did!

So glad you were able to find another Aussie for your BIL and equally as glad that the dog was adopted by someone familiar with the breed. They can be challenging! We have owned Aussies for over 20 years, and now live with our 4th & 5th.

Hazel is lovely, and your SIL looks so happy. I wonder why the owner surrendered Hazel, that must be very hard for her after being with someone for 7 years.

honestly, i'm not sure i believe the story and the animal control officer said she, too, was skeptical. she was told that hazel lived on a farm where goats were raised. the story was that she got a hold of one of the goats and killed it.

i don't know much about aussies other than all of the ones who have lived out here have been very sweet and oh so smart. none of them had any prey drive whatsoever and ignored the free ranging chickens at that end of the farm. (my danes don't go up there just because i don't know what they'd do with chickens!).

in my years of working with numerous dog rescues, i've heard all of the usual stories (moving, dog can't go. baby on the way. kids are allergic). but i've also heard some pretty unbelievable accounts as to why a dog was being surrendered. it doesn't really matter to me, so many times the excuses are so outlandish that all i care about is getting the dog away from the situation and into a better home.

i went up to see how hazel did last night. george said she was restless but eventually settled down. today, she has been his shadow while he worked around outside and seems to adore him. so sweet!

I agree, we have friends with two rescue aussies who are around chickens, cats, horses, tame deer and goats and have never tried to harm any of them. They also had two rescue aussies prior to their current rescues and no aggression either. However, hubby was bitten by a client's aussie, no provocation on his part. Unlike our friends' dogs, this dog was not well socialized so that probably played a big part.

Nina, that is such a happy story! She is beautiful and obviously loving. I’m guessing she was an outdoor only dog. I can beat you, seagrass! We’ve had 5 over 30 years. My first child was an Aussie 😊❤️, and all but one from rescue. All lived a minimum of 12 (1) years and maximum of

17. They each have had their quirks./ personalities...and smart.... Whoa! Our present two are six and 7. We learned later in life that two are better than one. Oh! And every time I read how much exercise they need...well, all of ours have made do with a bit of ball and frisbee time. Otherwise, they are inside with us and are very happy hanging out and lounging when we do. It scares me a little how they have grown in popularity... never a good thing for any breed.

Beautiful dog!! We have, gulp, 5 herding breed dogs, and I am doubting that story as well. I guess nothing is impossible, but killing an animal they’re bred to herd? Hmmm. Doesn’t sound right.

@kadefol, besides the ones who have lived out here over the years, i've known other aussies and as a whole, the breed is just very sweet. lack of socialization is exactly why i have never (and never will) raise a puppy. i live so far away from civilization that it would take a major effort for me to leave home long enough to get a young pup out and about!

@martinca_gw sunset zone 24, i LOVE that photo, what a gorgeous pair they are!! and i agree with you about breeds and popularity. i cringe every time someone makes "scooby doo" comments about my danes and i often hear "i'd love to have my own scooby doo".

I love Aussies! My guy Ozzie lived 14 years and was a wonderful companion but he was a bit territorial. Just before pandemic shutdown got a 9 year old rescue whose owner died. I was thrilled to find out he was half miniature Aussie, one quarter Australian cattle dog and DNA says the rest is poodle and a touch of shih tzu. The 9% Shih tzu must rule as this guy, much to my disappointment, hates to walk on a leash, won't play catch for love or money but at least is a silly willy as all Aussies are.

A friend's three year old Golden Retriever attacked her one year old toddler after the toddler's birthday party. Jealousy they felt and incredible that a Golden would do that but he did. Golden was put down.

Some dogs just aren't born to the breed I guess.

very sad about the golden and the only outcome that was proper. so many breeds become popular for one reason or another and people will run out, buy a male and a female of that breed, throw them together however many times they can and then sell the puppies for obnoxious amounts of $$$. and then people wonder why a dog that's a breed touted to be so calm and loving and great with children has become a monster. it's a soapbox i've been standing on for many, many years!
