Gray Benjamin Moore Paint Color in Bathroom

I desperately need help picking a BM paint color for my new bathroom. I am converting a 1/2 bath to a 3/4 and I will be removing the tiny north facing window to add a shower. Right now I have Gray Owl in the room and it looks terrible. It’s a sad muted green rather than the beautiful gray sample I selected. Lesson learned. I need a higher LRV and physical paint samples will be purchased for the space.

I have already selected Kohler Purist polished chrome plumbing fixtures and a dark gray/graphite vanity. The countertop and tile are next on the list and I am thinking of marble or a ceramic tile with a marble look.

Which BM grays would work best in this situation? I currently have Misty Gray, Graytint, and Bunny Gray as possible contenders.

Thank you!

Not BM but I know someone who uses SW On the Rocks as their go to gray.

I would choose counter and tile first and then complement. You may even decide on a white for example. With a dark grey vanity, it may feel fresher, lighter and provide some contrast.

I’d use Misty Gray. I have Misty Gray in my bathroom with a Carrera countertop and flooring and it looks great. I have Bunny Gray in another, small bathroom without a window and it definitely looks blue, which is what I wanted but might not be the look you are going for. I’d go lighter (Misty Gray) rather than darker (Bunny Gray or Gray Tint) in a small windowless bathroom unless you want to go really dark and bold.

@Maureen Thank you! I am going tile and countertop shopping Wednesday. I want to get some samples and bring them home and put some paint samples on the wall to pair them up. I am open to BM whites too! I feel like I see Decorator's White paired with marble a lot. I prefer lighter walls to keep the space airy.

@Carolae Thank you! That sounds like what I am imagining in my mind while designing the space. I will definitely get a sample of Misty Gray. I appreciate the honest feedback about Bunny Gray. Not really the look I am going for in this space, but it seems like a great color!

Remember- ALL these grey colours belong to identifiable, measurable Hue Families.

Although in some lighting they may appear ‘just grey’, they are still colours.

If you know to which Hue Family a colour belongs, it’s less of a surprise if a touch of its Parent Hue can be visible in some lighting.

Rather than pick greys at random, knowing to which Hue Family your tile or work surface belong, means then you could find a grey from the same neighbourhood to work alongside.

It’s possible for a homeowner to ‘measure’ the colour of their tile or marble with a hand-held Colorimeter. It tells you to their Hue Family and other useful colour attributes of Value (how light it is) + Chroma (how colourful or near to neutral it is )

You can find lots of greys and their Hue Family details at The Land of Color.

Bunny Gray can appear blueish - because it belongs to the Purple-Blue Hue Family.

Misty Gray belongs to the Blue-Green Hue Family.

It has approx half the Chroma (colourfulness) than Bunny Gray, so it possibly will look just grey, as it’s much closer to a true neutral.

But equally if it appears a little blue/green, that wouldn’t be a surprise because of its Blue-Green Hue Family location.

All these near neutrals are far more susceptible to changing light quality than more colourful colours and so are more inclined to render differently, room to room.

BM Gray Owl belongs towards the end of the Yellow Hue Family.

Close to the Green-Yellow Hue Family.

In some lighting it may look ‘just grey’.

But it also contains a good hit of inherent greenness

and that’s what you discerned in your bathroom.

In different circumstances it has the potential to colour-shift and look positively blue.

Bunny Grey was way too blue for me...I've used Grey Owl in many spots and it suits me...also look at the also-green-tinged Moonshine, another go-to for me. I'm now looking for a color for a bathroom wall...if anyone has ideas, and pardon the hijack. HELP ME!!

@Marylee H Thank you, this was all very helpful! I have to admit I came up with my list of colors after reading about dissatisfied Gray Owl customers. No one ever went as in-depth on why it was casting green in these conditions! I will bring my preferred tile and countertop samples home and try to pair a paint that falls into the same color family to properly compliment it.

@ekscrunchy Thank you for the honest feedback on Bunny Gray. I will also have to look at Moonshine in person.

Are you picking an accent wall to coordinate with one of these neutral grays?

Bunny Gray from BM goes with marble beautifully. I read about the paring in a magazine. When we redid our master bath a few years ago with lots of marble and dark wood cabinets I suggested Bunny Gray for the paint. My designer disagreed and wanted something else. My husband painted both colors on some sheet rock and we looked at them side by side without knowing which was which. The designer picked the Bunny Gray as the best shade.

    Pairing not paring

@Amy Thank you! I really liked the swatch so I may need to get a sample just to check it out. Maybe I could even put it in a different room? I am painting 5 rooms total. Why not refresh some other spaces after the bathroom project?!

I saw an advertisement for a local store that has BM samples half price. IDK if it's an early Mem Day sale, but I got Chantilly Lace, Decorator's White, Misty Gray, and Graytint. I figured I can always get more samples once I find tile I like. 4 for $20 was too good to pass up. I painted some 22 x 14 poster board with 2 coats and then added a 3-inch strip with 2 more coats of white semi-gloss to mimic the door/trim. I have to say Decorator's White looks AMAZING in the 1/2 bath with the current gray tile and white fixtures. I wish I had this color in this room for the past 6/7 years instead of Gray Owl.

" I can't wait to pick my tile"

    YOU ARE OUT OF ORDER............

Bath plan: fixtures, shower vanity, toilet etc.lighting.....and do you have enough?

Tile..... shower, shower walls, shower floor, and bath floor vanity counter surface

Paint..................IS LAST in your selection process.Dead last.

Stop worrying on paint is the answer. Every gray, any gray will be seen as ONE element against the other important elements not yet selected.

Paint was last here, and FYI is Ben Moore "wish" AF680 at 1/2 strength of the formula.......THROUGHOUT.

Paint IS last...Bunny Grey as was too blue for me. I am using a Pratt and Larson small sub tile--145-- in shower and thinking of BM Winter Solstice..any comments on that or on BM Sterling. Most of the (small, west facing, full of light) cottage is Grey Owi and I iike the enfillade look...no sharp distinctions between rooms. Trim is a lot of Distant Gray and cause I have matte black bathroom fixtures. thinking of black around door frame. in the new bathroom which haas terrazzo floors from Artistic Tile.

I have Kohler Purist in a gold in another bathroom--be aware that it does splotch but is gorgeous. DO NOT GET THOSE SELF CLOSING DOORS, thinking you wil save on hardware and get a minimalist look. I ended up having paid $150 for each self closure and THRN having to buy the Purist knobs for the cabinets...

She has NO tile, no counter top selected. ..............a paint conversation is pointless until she has tile selected. As are counter accessories for that matter as they are easily switched out at a finish of said bath.

@JAN MOYER Thank you for the information! This bathroom is also gorgeous!!

I am happy to report that I have all my final selections made (besides paint). I have lived with my tile samples a few days and I will be going with a 12 x 24 dolomite look porcelain for the bathroom floor and shower walls. The shower floor will be a 1 inch hexagon mosaic that coordinates with the 12 x 24. I also have my sample of the vanity which is listed as "graphite." I am going to do the top of the shower bench, shower curb, and vanity countertop in white quartz which has a slight gray speckle to it if you look really closely. I didn't like the veining of the faux marble quartz and thought it would clash too much with the dolomite look in the shower. I am attaching a photo of the samples for reference.

In person the tile looks like it has a taupe or greige vein to it. Do you have any BM suggestions with all of this? I definitely want something on the lighter/white side.

I will also have recessed lighting and an LED medicine cabinet with polished chrome faucet and shower fixtures. The sink and toilet are both Kohler white. Thank you again!

carolae beat me to it!! was going to say the same thing. I just used Calm in my living room. It's a light color, but has a nice gray tone. neither blue nor beige.

this bathroom has almost the same choices you've picked. I like your dark vanity.

here are some other shades of gray, and, in case you want to do a contrast color, a soft blue or blush pink would also look nice.

to keep the room from looking to blah and cold w/all the grays and whites, bring in some texture like woven baskets or rugs, wood shelves or teak stool/mat,

and some greenery like plants, orchids, along w/some art on the walls

woven wood blinds, baskets, plants, towels all bring in some color and depth. imagine the picture if all of these weren't here. blah.

@Carolae Thank you! Calm seems to have great reviews and should be bright enough for the room!

@Beth H. : Thank you! Another vote for Calm. I like that it doesn't read too beige for you. Grays can be so difficult.

I picked the dark gray vanity because I wanted some contrast knowing I planned to use the same tile for the floor of the bathroom and shower wall. The additional accent colors you shared are also very nice. I would be open to blush pink!

It's actually funny you mention woven baskets. Years ago I had this 1/2 bath painted Linen White and had white wicker accessories. The woven look would bring the room full circle once it's renovated.

I appreciate all the comments and help! I purchased samples of Calm, Silver Satin, Classic Gray, and Balboa Mist. I painted 2 coats of each sample in the current room and Calm and Balboa Mist both look great! Calm really complimented the lighter tones in the tile and Balboa Mist the darker veining in the tile. I have to wait and see the floor and shower completely installed against the vanity and new lighting, but I think it will most likely be one of those two!
