Best advice is to get advice from someone that lives close to you. I live in the hot humid south and can give good advice for people in the same climate. What works down here does not work up north.

Such as, I advise people to put out tomatoes as soon as possible, best in Feb. That is because our soil never gets really cold and they start growing and will not stunt. We have to beat the summer heat or we will not make any tomatoes. That advice does not hold up for the people further north.

Best to try out different ways to support plants. That seems to be one of the biggest issues. And do you want determinate or indeterminate.

I had great success with a hybrid - Crimson Carmelo that I planted because of its disease resistance. I got huge and produced all year long in my mild climate. I got 100s of tomatoes.

I follow a few tips I've learned when planting out: dig a larger, deeper hole than needed and put some compost and organic fertilizer in and mix with the soil in the hole, then remove lower leaves and plant the tomato starts deeper than they were in the container. They'll grow new roots along the stems.

I also fill the planting holes back in with compost, then top with the soil, and water the new transplants in with Maxicrop seaweed extract &/or compost tea.

Once planted, mulch thickly with hay or straw, and remove any lower leaves that are touching the ground.
