Input on Kitchen Cabinets

Hey All,

Finalizing the cabinet layout for our upcoming remodel and looking for some input from everyone here. We are fairly settled on the overall design, but are always open to constructive criticism. One thing to note with the below pictures is the short wall cabinet and bump-out on the back wall to the right of the sink will not actually be there, this drawing just has not been updated yet. We are sinking an existing load bearing wall/beam into the ceiling and exterior wall, just got word back from the engineer that we should be able to make everything flush (yay!). Additionally, the cabinet run with the microwave and open shelving is only 18" deep due to the space being a bit narrow and us needing proper space for the walkway. Lastly, the fridge shown has a gap above it, but that will not be there with the fridge we ordered. For reference, we are using Waypoint cabinets. Let us know your thoughts and thanks in advance!

Where are all of your drawers?? Please reconsider the doors and switch to drawers.

The cabinet to the left of the fridge will be 3 drawers now that the end bearing for the new LVL will be flush with the exterior wall. Also, with that 18" deep run of cabinets, the drawers will only be 15", so we thought more doors/shelves there would be better given the already reduced depth.

Too many doors of varying sizes/widths.... in the microwave cabinet area I'd change both of those base cabinets out to all drawers.

Are you reusing an old window...can it be moved? I would put the dishwasher between your fridge and your sink, and designate a prep area between your range and the sink. Do you have an actual layout with dimensions that you could add to your post?

The window is new and is being moved from its current location along with plumbing, HVAC, electrical, this is a down to the studs remodel. Here are some additional renderings, the ones in the OP are the most up to date, but this will give you a better idea of the space. Also included is a dimensional of the whole first floor as it exists now. The space we have provided us some unique challenges and the house is not large so options were limited. The cabinet to the right of the range is also a pull out trash unit, with a top drawer, as we are designating that stretch between the sink and range as our prep area.

In addition to the drawers next to the fridge, we also are changing up the tall cabinet with the microwave. So that will also have 4 drawers in it as well.

Many here will suggest that rather than a built in microwave, you buy a counter top microwave and place it on a shelf (making sure that you have adequate area around it for ventilation.). The issue is with the microwave’s longevity. When you need to replace it, a new built in one might not fit in the space where you have your planned one. And that might require major carpentry work. How often do you use your microwave? For what tasks? Would a simple counter-top model suffice? Just another thought....

@ptreckel so we did talk about that, especially since that is a reduced depth cabinet run, potentially making it harder to replace in the future. Ultimately, we use the microwave a decent amount (big leftover household) and like built in look, but did not want it to be highly visible on the other wall/don't have much room to work with since all our appliances are on a single wall. The cabinet we are using for that is actually an oven cabinet and it will have some additional space within the microwave cavity, so if we do have to replace down the line and need to go a bit bigger, hoping we can accommodate. Not ideal, but that is our rational for it being there and not just on the counter (which it currently is).
