Japanese Maple care

Planted this Japanese maple 3 years ago in Metro Detroit Southeast Michigan. There's a scar on the trunk I don't recall seeing before. Any reasons for why this may have happened? Anything I should do next? The biggest pest problem here is carpenter ants. But I don't see any of them active near the tree. Many thanks for your help.

    North side is unlikely to be frost damage. But it is not a big deal as long as any underlying wood (in the open scar) is hard and solid. No squishy bits :-) The tree will adjust and the scar heal naturally.

    I'd just add that JM's have very delicate and thin bark....damage from various sources is not unusual.
