LS Paisley Print?????

Was a at a local garden center looking for something NOT hosta, but of course I had to look at them. There was this nice small green with white medio. Hmmmmmm, label said LS Paisley Print. I do have one but it’s sorta in rescue and so doesn’t look like much with only 4 tiny leaves.

So, when I saw the so-called LSPP at the nursery, gallon pot, I bought it. But this morning after watering it, I felt uneasy......it looked more like Sting all of a sudden. I checked the HL. Yup, Sting And if that wasn’t proof enough, the one I ordered arrived today. Here’s the wrong LSPP

You would think Monrovia would know the difference. Guess not. No wonder there’s so many of us asking for IDs or finding out we have a different hosta. I will call the garden center but don’t think it will matter. The ticket even showed LSPP leaf. Guess I’m the dummy!

The BIG reason to purchase from smaller hosta specialty growers, is that they will get a pile of tc hostas and grow them for a few years to see if they come true to type. Hostas are unstable and even though the tc process is supposed to produce identical hostas, it often doesn't, and we often see sports in batches at big box stores. One would hope that Monrovia has a little more expertise, but they sell many many plants, and the checker person is looking for a green hosta with a lighter maple leaf in the center, so it got thru.

FYI, way back when Blue Mouse Ears was IT, I was anxious to buy more mice sports. I bought some from the originators (the Deckers) and to fill out the order I ordered h.Blue Baron (their intro). It is supposed to have 7" long blue/grey leaves. That was well over a decade ago and that plant has never had leaves longer than 3". Now think of it...here is a plant from the originator, and they approved it and shipped it to me. It hasn't ever matched their description. So YUP, what you get, and what the label says won't always match. Even if the label is pasted on the pot.

Debra, don't be too quick to blame Monrovia, you'd be shocked at how many customers will pull tags out of pots and no pay any attention to where they put it back.....just sayin'...

I get what you’re saying Pieter, but this was one of those super attached tags where you almost have to cut the pot to get the tag off. Like this:

You are absolutely right Babka, I do know this and have ordered 22 hostas from vendors this year. But I had to look........and there it was, very nice plant, just the wrong plant! Right picture, wrong plant........yup, yup, live and learn.

Debra, it may look very different next year when it is not forced and growth in too much sun. I think it is LSPP. I doubt it was a mislabeled Sting because Sting is not a HOTY, but more of a collector’s Hosta. If not, then you have 2 Stings. My Earth Angel and Brother Stefans are from Lowe’s and Home Depot, respectively. I have several more from those stores. The first year plants look quite different the next year, in a good way.
