Ikea Formal dinning table

Has anyone used the Ikea Norvidken extendable table as formal dinning table?
I am looking for some inspiration to find chairs to match this table.
Also how is the quality of the table?
Can I paint/stain this table in future, say black may be..?

We don’t have a separate formal dinning room but we do have a big living room which we are using for formal seating and the second half for a semi-formal dinning area for large family gatherings etc..

    Thanks for your feedback Patricia!
We don’t plan to keep chairs on those 2 ends. Mainly it will be 3 chairs on each side and those 2 ends will be used if for any extra guests and some extra table space for food.

I recently bought some Ikea stuff, and I was thinking about purchasing a table top from them (to hack a foldout table). I discovered that all items allow you to click on "material" description and find out what it's made of - particle board or real wood. You can also filter product searches by real wood. So I'd start there. If it's real wood, it's probably pretty good. If it's particle board, then I'd be nervous.

My experience with Ikea over the years is that the real wood stuff is actually pretty sturdy and lasts, while the particle board stuff doesn't handle being relocated really well (the joints don't hold), and does break down/sag over time. While I don't have the table you are asking about, I do have an Ikea table made from real wood that was our dining table during the apartment days and now is our puzzle table. It's still perfectly sturdy, no problems.

Product details from the website: "Table top: Particleboard, Ash Veneer... Paper foil" ... "Extension leaf: Particle- and fiberboard with honeycomb paper filling."

based on the description, this seems to be middle-to-lowest quality for them. I love IKEA, some of their stuff is fantastic for the price but you have to know what to look for (solid wood, for example). any surfaces using "foil" is their flimsiest quality. it's basically a micro thin veneer, almost like contact paper. it chips, peels, and wears through SO easily.

EDIT: I'm guessing from the description of that table that the top might actually ash veneer (some real wood veneers can be good), but that paper foil is possibly on the outer edges. that part of a table will get crashed into with chairs, etc, very often. if you still want this table, look at it in a showroom and see whether the sides have wood veneer, or the flimsy type.

I can find a beautiful dining room table that is far better quality on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace pretty much any day of the week. People seem to be selling these all the time.

I just looked on craigslist now and found this set for $475. Table and 8 chairs. Teak with a slate inlay.

The Ikea dining table is not at all formal.

For dining, how formal will it be? Fine china, silver, crystal, etc?

Agree, judianna20." Formal" is something totally different in my book. Maybe she is just referencing a separate guest dining room it will go in as opposed to the casual family dining area elsewhere in the home.

sweetadobe, I did find this inspiration photo for a "formal Ikea dining room". It looks very inviting.

@decoenthusiaste - Yes, you put it right - its not really a "formal" table (although I have china and silverware that I plan to use occasionally for big family dinners at this table). Thank you!

@elcieg Thank you for the inspo pics! It helps!
