Glass Canopy Range Hood

If you are the owner of a glass canopy range hood, could you please share your experience with it? Pros/cons? Do you find it necessary to clean it extensively every day to keep it from becoming an eye sore?

    It's not just that the glass shows the splatters as soon as you cook. It's that glass hoods do not function well as exhausts. First because they do not have the capture and containment design that a full stainless steel canopy hood has. Second because they almost always use mesh filters instead of baffle filters. Mesh filters quickly become clogged with grease unless you clean them frequently. As soon as there is grease on the mesh, the exhaust ability is impaired. This is as opposed to hoods with baffle filters. The baffle filters still need to be cleaned of course, but the hood's exhaust won't become impaired immediately the way mesh filters do.

    Given the amount of grease that I regularly clean off my stainless steel hood, I don't even want to start thinking about how bad it would look if it was made out of glass.


    On the other hand, we have a very effective hood that actually succeeds in eliminating cooking smells in our open-floorplan kitchen. We followed (most) of the excellent advice that @kaseki regularly gives in this forum.


    A lot of "designer vent hoods" aren't much more than glorified noise makers. So, maybe it doesn't matter that much that they are made from glass, as they don't really capture most of the cooking fumes anyway. No captured fumes means nothing to make the glass dirty -- of course, the rest of your cabinets will now have a build-up of grease. But that happens more slowly and you might not immediately notice.

    Because most residential glass hoods are cylindrically formed, and not spherically formed, even the effluent that is captured is allowed to escape rather than at least temporarily trapped for removal. (See exception image below.)

    For various good reasons residential hoods will deviate from commercial hoods (most efficient at capture and containment). However, this deviation needs to be kept to a minimum; the basic characteristics including plume overlapping containment design, effective filtering, and adequate flow rate to ensure that captured plumes do not reflect out but are entrained in the air flow, pulled through the filtering, and exhausted outside.

    This forum has an immense body of commentary on hood systems and the make-up air systems needed for all but the most modest of flow rates. Please search them out. We will be happy to help you refine your systems, but basic understandings are needed first.

    Timely as I just had the glass hood removed today and replaced with a much better stainless steel model.


    the glass one was garbage, it didn’t vent worth a darn and it was a nightmare to keep clean. Dust settled hours after a thorough scrubbing/degreasing, I hated it from day one. My husband picked it out and swore he would keep it clean, that lasted a weekend at best.
