Thank you for sharing a wonderful rose that isn't mentioned very often. He's one of my favorites, and yes, for those who didn't know, Wildeve is a he. I only learned that last year. Mine is sprawly and a bit lanky, so a few canes are propped up, but those blooms are worth a little extra care. I wish I had planted mine against a fence. Worth noting, he's also very hardy in colder zones.

I must have skipped over this part of the description in the catalog: he was named after the character in Thomas Hardy’s The Return of the Native. I found elsewhere: Thomas Hardy's novels epitomise the English countryside and this rose is named after Damon Wildeve, the dashing but ultimately doomed (and which Hardy hero isn't?) suitor to Eustacia Vye in 'Return of the Native'.

Labi, you surely are not alone. I assumed Wildeve was a woman of questionable repute. Embarrassed to say that although I read a lot, I have not read all of Thomas Hardy. I'm just thrilled this rose is getting some attention. I don't believe I cut off a single dead cane this spring and I know for sure there were several nice strong basal shoots. Such a good one!

Rosecanadian I quite agree! More apricot in Wildeve’s pink than I was expecting, a happy surprise I hope it stays this color. My real Evelyn is covered in buds… any day now!

I bought my Evelyn from sheridan nurseries. They usually have them. Call them if you have one nearby.
