Bart, I tried a Twilight Zone and it did grow reasonably well, but the blooms were totally hopeless in heat. Ebb Tide was a slower grower but the blooms stood up to heat much better. Both grafted. I have basically given up on purple roses apart from Munstead Wood, which is only close to purple in early Spring anyway. Oh and Stormy Weather, but again, the purple tones are fleeting.

I grow Twilight Zone as own root since 2017 in my zone 5 garden. It needs partial shade (morning sun only) and tons of rain to grow and bloom. I have soaking wet heavy clay, but it won't bloom unless it's day long rain, or 1 inch of rain per week. It stays small and compact. I find that low thorn roses like Twilight Zone is a rain hog.

I have TZ own root, Bart. I am also in a dry climate and mine seems to do well here. I do have it on irrigation.

I planted a small own root Twilight Zone last fall, mine has given me a few pretty blooms but it has barely grown at all, to the point I'm afraid of stepping on it when I'm working on my other roses. Same thing with my Ebb Tide. I have had much better luck with Celestial Night.

My two Twilight Zone roses are grafted, and I've grown them since the year they were first sold (2013?). My roses are vigorous and bloom well. I recommend that if you want a bloomier, more vigorous TZ, grow the grafted. They are my favorite purple rose and are a deep purple color in my garden. Diane
