dining layout help!

hello! we have a little dining nook in the kitchen (93”x77”) and I’m stuck on the right dining table to get. I didn’t initially plan to have the high stools there, but they’re pretty convenient for casual kitchen hang outs so we will keep them. Would you suggest a round table or would that be too tight and I have to stick with rectangular? I’m having such a hard time visualizing options!

i think you must move the counter stools out to make any table work in this narrow space of 7.75’ x 6.41’. What about a counter height trestle table? A trestle table is long & narrow like your space This way you’d retain the same seating level for the hanging out ambiance. I searched counter height trestle tables for seating 6 & there’s lots of choices out there.

I can’t tell if your stools are counter height or bar height but a possible solution is to get more of the same and the same height, narrow width table. They can either be tucked under the table or turned to the counter when someone wants to chat with someone in the kitchen.

Look for a very narrow table. If it helps, tape the size on the floor, place your chairs around it to make sure you have enough room to pull them out without trapping anyone on the far end.

Have you thought about a gateleg table?

I agree that the stools seem awkward because there is no place for your legs? An overhang would be more comfortable, or use just a table.

I think you have room for a round table. If you are comfortable sitting on those stools, consider getting a round counter-height table, often called a bistro or pub table.

That way you can use the stools you already have for sitting both at the new table and the counter.

If you want to squeeze in a standard height dining table. consider putting an upholstered bench against the wall and a round table in front of the bench. If you don’t have little kids or rambunctious older kids, a glass table might look nice there

If you like, you can fix a padded panel to the wall to be a backrest. But when you are not sitting at the table, you can push the table in a bit closer to the wall. Get a longer cord and chain for your chandelier and “swag” your chandelier a bit to the right so it is centered over the new table. And drop it a bit lower. It’s a pretty chandelier!

PS: If you do not know how to do electrical work, get an electrician to do the work of swagging the light fixture. No DIY.

If you decide to go with bench and table, after you have swagged the light over the table, get a drape for the window and swag it going the other way.

If you decide to get a counter-height table and use the gray stools, get ceiling to floor drapes to frame your chandelier hanging over the table, and try some big art on the empty wall

    What you like...

I agree with the suggestions of a counter height narrow table. That way, you can turn the counter stools back toward the table if you want to all eat at the table.

I wouldn’t keep the stools because they limit your choices of table sizes. You will still be able to chat across the peninsula. Try it out for a few days using a card table and chairs. Then you can decide what size and shape table will suit you. Otherwise, you need to extend the counter so your legs fit under the eating surface. By using the counter for eating, you are also reducing the work space of your kitchen counters. I think you will find regular height chairs are more comfortable than the counter height chairs and encourage lingering over coffee ( or something stronger!) after dinner. Furnishing it into a charming dining space will be more fun than forcing all the decorating decisions around the stools.

Wondering how comfortable stools are without an overhang and narrowing down better options.

If you had bench seating or even went with a counter top table, if you want a connection into kitchen, do you think either of these would be more comfortable and practical vs squeezing in a small table? I think either would create a much more engaging social space as well.

Have a carpenter build a lidded, storage window bench/banquette with width of standard outdoor cushions and tuck a small table in the "L" with a couple of chairs. Add a drop or hard wired pendant over the table to define and light the space. Add roll-up bamboo or white shades.

Or dining bench something like this with a small tulip table, light, art, narrow bookcase for cookbooks and serving top.

for a hangout spot I'd get a round pedestal/ bistro table/ smallish......fun pretty chairs w backs/ small scale. Put color on the window wall...only a valance if anything at window. SQ footage should be maximized a cute table and dont try too much w full drapes... heavy big chairs or built ins that are costly. I wouldnt swap counters just to get an overhang. Be expressive and the light fixture is a great start. Just put a color on the wall. do you have a view? bring it in with light and all that contributes, without costing a buck....open the blinds.

Thank you SO much everyone!! I think I'm going to get rid of the bar stools. They're holding me back! Love the idea of a round table with bench built ins. I'll pursue that. And will definitely swap out the lighting. Thank you again!!
