Bought this beautiful 36"x79" mahogany door slab as a housewarming gift to myself before I moved in. I measured the width of the door before buying, but did not measure the height. It turns out our doorway is 82" instead of the standard 80". I can still return this door, but I love it, and also, it's REALLY hard to find a 36x82" door, especially one as handsome as this. I had planned to finish it clear with Epiphanes stain and wood finish.

I have a couple of thoughts regarding filling the gap. I could buy some mahogany and either put a 3" strip on the bottom and hide it with a toe kick (I guess on both sides of the door?), or just embrace the look and put a 1.5" strip on top and bottom. Would this look terrible?

Less appealing options include painting it, in which case the added wood wouldn't be visible, but neither would the beautiful mahogany. I could order a custom door, but that's probably $2k at least.

Filling in the doorframe 3" isn't going to work because there are sidelites, and they are 82" tall.
