40”x28” based on the minimum 42” aisles between the island and counter on the other side and 44” minimum between the island and the wall. So, you do not really have room for two seats facing the sink and, if you want storage on the cook’s side, the storage would need to be shallow to leave 15” of leg room.

at 24 inches deep total...you could do something with 12 in overhang and open cab on sink side at 12 in deep .Dont discount the usefulness of that. Adding furniture feet and a matching interior and those cabinet shelves would be useful. and can look good in your space. the top surface at 24 in depth could add that workspace component. That leaves 80 in for your two aisles and if a stool is on both ends and only one stool on long side then that makes this feasible. You could curve the overhang gently and if only one seated person at widest depth and then curve back makes the aisle walkway a bit more kind. This is not drawers on kitchen side ..... but I still think from the pict I'd want something. the room does not appear as it was originally a kitchen.......have to work with it being a passage to your patio it appears. think about a stool each end and a third stool at the longer side and how that helps w measuring something out.

I have a small kitchen and added an island because I needed counter and storage space. It became the white elephant in the room. We hated sitting at it to eat and we have to chase around the island if we are both in the kitchen.

maybe the whole room could be posted as you have a fridge wall??? it does not appear the wall on the left will ever be a working wall . the traffic here seems to run the length of the space.... not across ......so respecting that foot traffic and achieving something opposite the sink with some seating mixed in I think is valid and can be a benefit. CARE w dimensions...but the smallest of depths of landing/work spaces is better than none.

The only thing I can think of would be a short but wide peninsula coming out from the wall, with seating facing the patio (or the fridge). But it doesn’t feel great to me - do you have a square or rectangular table you can place in that position to see if it would work? It looks like you might have small kids, do they go through the kitchen and out the patio door often? If you need storage, you can do a large hutch against the wall.

the minimum an island should have is 36" and even that is a bit tight.

What are you trying to get out of the island you want to install? Do you want the island for seating, for counter space, or for more cabinet space?
