Only a Few Open Well Today

I think I have at least a dozen daylilies blooming today, but most of them look awful. Anything with an edge either can't open fully, or is terribly spotchy after yesterday's rain. Some have wonky sepals. Here are a few that did look OK.

Buddy's Black Eye ffo - I'm glad this one is finally its registered height this season. It is double scaping, so eventually I should be able to get a nice clump shot of it.

Michigan Nikki ffo - another one that has grown into a nice clump

Tart With A Heart opening well and looking nice on another day when most cannot open.

Fighting Fire ffo from a couple days ago. Because of the hole in the petal I didn't post it then. But today this photo looks better than most anything else I took this morning.

Nice photos! That Tart with a Heart is gorgeous. I am thinking about trying it. I like Michigan Nikki too. Even with hole in the petal, fighting fire is lovely!

Great color on Fighting Fire. Buddy's Black Eye has a really nice tone on tone color. Too bad it is an EV. What is your hardiness zone?

Nat - Tart With A Heart would look pretty planted to a solid red like Fighting Fire. I have it growing in a pot right now, but I'll probably plant it next to one of my new reds, either Sensational Heart or Stolen Heart.

Hoosier Nan - Tart With A Heart would fit right in would your red-eyed breeding program. It is an evergreen, so you might have to grow it in your greenhouse. I had a hard time deciding between it and Cherries in the Snow. I suspect they have the same parentage. I finally went with Tart because I liked the name better.

Julia - My Zone used to be 6B, but it changed three years ago to Zone 7. So far, Buddy's Black Eye has been very hardy for me.

I know what you mean about flowers not opening well today. It would have been a great clump day but I made few photos today. Tart with a Heart continues to look good. Fight Fighting Fire has such wonderful color.

Lovely photos today, looks as though red is todays color. Is it too cool for the blooms to open correctly? it seems a common complaint this past week.

Most of the area around Chicago is experiencing drought conditions. i spent three hours hand watering my beds today. we had three inches of rain about 10 days ago but no rain for at least three weeks previous to that. Sounds like most of you have had plenty of rain.

Sherry - Most of my edged daylilies need night temps in the upper 60s to open properly. Last night's low was 60, and recent night lows have been in the 50s and 40s. Also the lack of sun on overcast days contributes to the opening problems. The splotchiness was caused by the previous day's rain.
