A quick check points toArctium minus, our common burdock.

I can't say I have ever been familiar with it, apart from drinking LOTS of dandelion and burdock as a kid. Even though it would appear to have been the roots of A. lappa, Greater burdock that were used.

Absolutely Burdock. Its in the Asteraceae. I’d hesitate to designate a species since they often hybridise. lappa has solid leaf stems. minus are hollow. Who knows what the hybrids have ......

You are most welcome thefof. I certainly know of eating Burdock but have never heard of drinking it. I am familiar with dandelion wine. So was it dandelion/burdock wine you were imbibing?

Floral. As you say Pawlonia is a tree. There was a plantation near my place in Queensland. Very fast growing trees.

peren. As a kid, i'm now 76, one of the soft drinks was dandelion & burdock, along with orangade, lemonade and others. Looking on wiki it seems it is similar to the sarsaparilla and root beers found on your side of the pond. I wouldn't call it wine, but I suspect it was slightly alcoholic, as it was made from the lightly fermented roots of the 2 plants.
