Clematis Florida Sieboldii

About 5 years ago I purchased bareroot clematises from Costco. One of them was Florida Sieboldii. I potted them up and kept them in pots for a couple years then gave some away and planted some. By this time I didn’t know what was what because I lost the labels and one clematis was the wrong one. Not all of the plants had bloomed yet either. I planted this one and a couple others near an old apple tree. We ended up having the apple tree removed and the stump ground. I moved the others ones (both Jackmanii) to other spots. I think this one had died back so I didnt do anything with it. I noticed it last year, but it was eaten by bunnies and I forgot about it. Again, I saw it starting to grow this year and that it formed buds. I assumed it was a Jackmanii until it opened. I’m super surprised that it was this finicky clematis! It’s been neglected for a long time lol. Now that I known what it is I would like to move it, but I think I would be pressing my luck doing that lol.

I’ll post another picture when it opens all the way.

Oh, that’s too bad! It’s still a gorgeous clematis, but not the same. Hopefully, they’ll send you the correct one!

This is f. sieboldii yesterday. Still not completely open, but getting there.

Cab, it does have the white with purple. It looks kind of different than pics of it I've seen. I bought two FS plants as bare roots from Longwood Gardens a couple of years ago. The plants are doing fine, haven't bloomed until just today. One is blooming and it looks more like Venosa Violaceae. I hope it'll turn white with the purple centers! If not I will be looking for a source of either plants or cuttings because I really wanted this one. Was so much looking forward to seeing it. Would like Viennetta even better I think. Good luck with yours...looking to see more pics as they open up more.

Congratulations!! I have had a love/hate relationship with this particular vine for many, many years :-) Managed to kill off several of them before also encountering them for sale at Costco. I believe it was a 4-pack with 2 each of 2 different vines that I shared with my sister. Only one of the two Sieboldii's turned out to be that....and of course it was the one I gave to my sister. When she moved into a condo, I dug hers up and managed to grow it on successfully in a container for a couple of seasons before last year, when it did absolutely nothing!! I tend not to give up on clems unless I know for sure they are dead-dead and not just masquerading as dead :-) It is still alive but off to a very slow start this year. I doubt I will see any flowers this season. An extraordinarily picky clematis to grow!!

The flower in the OP's photo is not yet fully open so I would guess it will look more as it should once that happens.

btw, the second Costco selection in that deal was Ramona and that has taken off like gangbusters!

Erasmus- Gardengal is right, it’s not completely open yet. I was just too excited and had to share. I hope yours are the correct plant. It’s so disappointing to be excited about something, have to wait for it to bloom and then find out it’s not the right plant. And then not being sure if you can find it to purchase again. I have Venosa Violacea and it just started to bloom. This is what mine looks like.

Gardengal- Thank you! I was so happy and surprised that it was this one and not Jackmanii. I hope yours bulks up and gives you lots of blooms next year!

Yep, mine's Venosa V. I wrote to the company I bought it from. They're not Longwood they're Longfield. I think they are the source of the bagged ones at Costco. Sometimes I think what they package must be f sieboldii. I wrote to them about it and they want a picture, which I sure can send. I don't care as much about being sent a replacement as just to know that what they send is what it's supposed to be. Just would be thrilled to get the real thing. Let's see more pics of yours!

I would not try to move your clematis. It is doing well there!

Although mine got off to a late start (as noted in my previous comment), it has done remarkably well this season and is still in bloom, although the wind and rain we are currently experiencing from the effects of the bomb cyclone hitting the west coast now will probably put paid to that.

FWIW, if you find it is not in an ideal location, I would not hesitate about moving it. Mine has been moved twice.
