I'm not sure why staggered tile is too traditional? It's timeless, maybe, but I don't think traditional has the monopoly on staggered tile.

I think this is completely a matter of personal taste unless you're going for a specific aesthetic. Personally I don't like the look of stacked (tile or masonry) but that's me.

Not a fan of stacked, I love the staggered with this tile. What about vertical staggered?

IMO stacked with that style and size of tile will look more contemporary but IMO much nicer than the 1/3 stagger which would be the best for that tile to avoind lippage .

Which is more visually pleasing to you? I prefer staggered (running bond) to horizontal stacked pattern with Shaker style cabinetry.

Can't speak to install issues, but your kitchen is smack dab in the middle of transitional. If you want to tip it slightly toward more modern and also a little more style-forward, you go with the stacked. If you want to keep it more traditional and classic, you go with the staggered.

Disagree that stacked is classic - it might be in europe, but in the US it's always tilted modern. I've been liking it for the last 5 years or so, but admit that prior to that i was not a fan. It reminded me of old 80s bathrooms and kitchens. I think it would look nice here, and i'd probably choose it, but that's because i don't love traditional style.

I'd also look at the vertical staggered.

I think that the tile is such a traditional shape and color that the stacked layout makes it fresh. And the rest of your kitchen looks nice and classic, so that stacked tile will be a tiny punch of modern. Are you taking it all over that wall?

Stacked is a much more modern look if that is what you are after.

I did stacked in my new master bathroom and I love it but, in my kitchen reno I am going with a classic subway, as it suits my more traditional kitchen.

I think the grills in your windows lean this kitchen more traditional than modern so the staggered tile would be more in keeping with this feature which it will be right on top of and next too.

As previously stated , there will be a lippage issue with that tile at 1/2 brick pattern. Try putting it up there at 1/3 brick and see what you think?

The stacked looks more modern but I like it for your home. The traditional staggered will always look good but doing it differently would be a nice surprise.

Based on the responses, i think this is one of those rare times that either option will look lovely. Its just a matter of your personal preference. Most of the backsplash questions on the forum are having to walk people off the ledge from some ugly choices that will objectively look bad. Whatever you choose may not appeal to everyone (per some comments above) but it definitely wont look bad.

how about something different? since you have that entire wall as a focal point, do something to take advantage of it, especially since youre using plain white subway tile.

if you opt for the regular running bond, try doing the 1/3 offset for a bit diff look

they even have a 1/4 offset

As a designer, I do a ton of Full Height Kitchen Backsplash implementations. Please know that subway no matter the installation method is a personal choice and neither wrong or right. Whatever installation method you choose, 10 years from now whether straight stacked or brick set it will be timeless as stated from another commenter. If their was one small caveat, straight stack would lend it self to a bit more contemporary look but do not let that be your guide. To be so literal in design and theme can be stagnate in choice. Send a picture when you are done!!!

I personally like stacked for your kitchen but I'm always going to choose a more modern aesthetic.

I have a strange question, how did you get the tile to stick to your wall to see which layout you like best? I'm currently trying to decide between the two layout styles but my samples keep falling off the wall to compare. I even tried painter's tape but the tile is too heavy so it just falls off.
