In your climate it might just make more sense to grow a dwarf cherry.

Eugenias are usually better for people in warmer climates where real cherries are very difficult to grow.

If you're curious, I've tasted Surinam cherry before (supposed to be the best eugenia). Interestingly the flavor greatly varies on different trees. It had a spicy bell pepper flavor, tasting more like a plum, a small nuance of cherry flavor, and it was kind of resinous tasting (a bit like a green unripe mango) if not completely ripe. Some of them tasted more like blackberries. They were good and tasty to eat, but I would say regular plums and cherries taste a little better.
