Heads Up: Sharp Microwave Drawer #SMD2489ES

I've been designing with microwave drawers for years and this is the first time I've seen a microwave drawer that appears to have an unfinished side to the "drawer front". It's almost like it's missing a trim piece or something fell off in shipping. The spec sheet drawing does show it...but I'm wondering why Sharp doesn't clarify in the specs that this microwave should be installed between two cabinets or have an end panel to hide the side better. You can actually see in to the components of the microwave. Am I missing something? Was anyone else surprised by this model's appearance?

Is this the new hybrid MW model with convection? The whole thing is sticking out way too far for me.

It is SMART controlled. Does that mean it does not have a timer? My KA range is like that. I did not know that fact until reading up on it AFTER it was ordered. My appliance rep recommended. No timer or temperature indication light. I have to look at either my phone, or an iPad app.

Perhaps it's because Sharp supports flush-mounting the oven which would eliminate the problem. However every photo of the oven I looked at does show it installed between other appliances or cabinets, or with an end panel. (I'm thinking that the oven's top, horizontal trim is there to push the front of the oven out so that the tilt-out control panel isn't hidden by a countertop installed above it.)

No, it has a tilt-out control panel with the usual microwave controls (start/stop, timer, power level, etc.).

I ended up ordering a side panel on the island to cover it up. Being frameless, it's fine not as a flush install. We were really tight on space for this design and barely made everything fit. I wanted this microwave in another area of the kitchen (next to refrigerator), but the interior designer and homeowners wanted it here in the island. If it had been in the other area, would've been a non-issue. I have another customer that just specified this microwave at the end of an island and I warned them about it. Which is why I'm here warning anyone considering this microwave.

I just ran into the same thing. I figured out that the installation instructions show standard mount only. You need to use the specification sheet for the cabinet cutout dimensions, NOT the install instructions for a flush mount. http://documents.designerappliances.com/Specification-Sheet-SMD2489ES.pdf. I haven’t determined how I am going to fix yet. I may have the installer widen the cabinet cutout. I would appreciate any other ideas out there….
