My spartioides saga

She's growing! Here she is when I got her (end of April)

She then lost all but 2 of her leaves (technically peduncles I'm told) but now she's growing a couple of new ones.

And I think she may be getting flower buds...

Wow that thing is cool! You did really well. I'm looking at your picture very closely and taking notes. Heat mat, water reservoir, netpots. Do you put on a lid or no?

I am pretty excited about these developments :-)

I didn't put a lid on these, but, after spartioides started losing its leaves I moved it to my Wardian case. It's still in the net pot. It did have some roots when I got it, but I haven't seen any new root growth poking out of the pot yet.

    Very cool. Great job SLD!

SLD - not a question per se on your hoya, but rather on the net pots. I too grow my plants in net pots inside a cache pot. Eventually the roots start to spring from every opening and fill the pot. Usually around that time I transplant them into a super chunky mix inside a regular pot.

The question is - do you do something similar or do you continue to grow them out in the net pots for the balance of their lives? Do they ever get into a regular pot and mix or is their home the expanded shale?

BTW - that is one strange plant!

Bill, I always have transplanted them into my chunky mix. Maybe some day I'll leave one in semi hydro and see how it does.

Great work SLD! Spartioides is very nicely! So excited to see the blooms! I've read they don't last a very long time so be ready with the camera...

Hi everyone, I’m new to houzz. I received mine in spaghnum with a few large perlite chunks. I was told to let it barely get dry and then water it, and keep it in this medium. It was in the mail lost for 19 days and lost some peduncles, which it quickly grew back. About 4 months later it bloomed one night and has bloomed again but I missed it. I don’t remember any scent . To my delight, it had what looked like grass growing, but is actually a new baby plant. I grow it in a grow tent.

Hi @Stacy, thank you so much for sharing, the flowers are adorable! I love the red of the peduncle before opening. That's one tough hoya to survive that long in a box!

How long was it between blooms? We're both instances of blooming at night?

Looking back at my photos, one flower opened on April 24 and then closed back up. On April 26 the other 3 opened, so I guess it really did last about 2 days, but they only stayed open one night and into the morning a little. The second time it bloomed was just a few weeks ago and I was busy and didn’t check it for a few days or so. I would guess it bloomed at night again.

It has only a small old woody growth, is sun stressed, and the baby plant is so cute.

Thank you! It's very cute in it's strangeness! I had one that quickly died in my care but I'd definitely try again one day.

If you don't mind me asking, I notice you have a lot of different mixes with your hoyas including what looks like coco chips? I've been wanting to use coco coir and chips more but I'm not confident in how much to use and with which hoyas to use those elements; how do you decide?

Stacy, thank you so much for the info and pics. it's especially exciting that you had a bonus baby pop up. Hopefully mine will do as well as yours has. Right now I'm planning to keep it in the shale until it's more established.

I love this weirdo Hoya but haven't been able to find it. Did you import it?

yes, it came from AH Hoyas.

Ah, one day I'll get up the courage to import some plants and this will definitely be on that list.

Stupidlazydog is expand shale only for semi-hydro, used like lecca or can it be used as a perm. potting medium?

Stupidlazydog I am so thankful for all of the posts on here. They have definitely helped me along on my hoya journey.

I hope yours continues to grow nicely for you.

Here is a photo from last Thursday. The little plant gets bigger very slowly. The bigger one doesn’t seem to grow for a while but it looks like I may have eight flowers next time. It’s so very red and I hope it’s not too sun stressed.

I found mine from mylittleurbanjungle on etsy.

Stupidlazydog, your’s is looking like it said forget flowering, I need to grow more first! It looks happy. It’s exciting to see that growth nub. This is a very interesting one to watch grow. It’s neat to see one growing in moss and another in shale also.
