This is a drystack wall. The only item that is mortared is the top cap stone.

Did you have to put in a footer underneath the dry stacked wall? If so, how far did you have to go down? 42"?

No, a footer is not needed in drystack. It needs to be a well drained gravel bed base and then you start you stack from there.
