The weigela is not happy. Plants die. The reasons are unknowable without a complete history of said weigela under your care and a full site analysis.

Maybe I’ll move it to a different area and see what happens. Worst case I’ll return it for an exchange

Is it planted right up against a wall or fence? If so, even if it were healthy, it would need to be moved. What did the ’babying’ comprise?

did you perhaps overwater it?

a shrub like that does not need daily water

I think of weigela as a full sun plant. The location next to the fence may be a contributing factor in its' decline.

first.. straight down pix are wonky ... dont know why.. but we always struggle with them ..

second ... is that the foundation inches to the left ... Ws can get very large ...

third.. it looks like a new transplant that is struggling thru its first year ... it is probably growing roots to do much better in the future ... if you returned it to a nursery i ran ... i would tell you its not dead.. and im not returning your money ... if big box.. well ... whatever the screw guys thinks will rule the day .. lol ...

in your midwest area... i will yell... NOTHING IS MOVED IN JULY/AUGUST ... do it in fall.. and search out pix of its potential .. and plant it in a proper location for its future potential ...

It was a tough winter--spring for some Weigela here in southern MN, especially newly planted ones. They finally seem to be bouncing back.

I lost two established weigelas in Utah over the winter. We're experiencing historic drought conditions and I think our lack of fall and winter precipitation this year did them in. I put in two new ones in early June in full sun and so far they seem to be doing well despite some incredible heat.
