looks like a difference between the early spring flush .. and the mid summer flush ....

any recall of anything extraordinary in spring .... like a frost or freeze hitting emerging leaves ...

i was in the drive thru the other day .... and i have no clue what happened to that poor plant... but i noticed its current flush was double leaf size than what little came out in spring.. besides the fact it looked like someone ran it over ... maybe the snowplow ... i thought it would be kind to put it out of my misery ....

Ken, we did have a two successive nights of hard freeze in mid May. It was cold enough to cause Caragana 'Walker' (z3 plant ) to lose its foliage, which has since recovered.

frost/freeze is an interesting phenom ... destroying one plant.. and the nest untouched ... or no real noticeable damage.. until say... you notice it on july 9th and wonder.. wt-heck ... lol ...

sometimes its very hard to figure out when the actual insult occurred...

when i was first getting into conifers ... i had a lot of spring losses ... and i came to understand... they may have basically been evergreen dead in fall.. and winter just made them look dead.. when they browned in late spring ...

again.. when did the harm actually happen.. who knows ... once i figured it out.. i did not put my hoses away in early october.. but left them out.. to make sure.. in my sand.. that there was no fall drought.. and the evergreens went into ground freeze winter.. properly hydrated ... and bingo .. more success ...

bottom line. i doubt there is anything to worry about with your plants .. the new growth looks great.. which means its current status should be good ...
