Kitchen Layout Opinions

last modified: 5 years ago

I am using some free on-line software to visualize some options. My current designer doesn't seem to be very forthcoming with ideas. I have a small u-shaped kitchen. I can expand the right wall from 93" to about 103" before it impedes on the open space. I am trying to fit in my fridge and a wall cabinet for a 24" steam oven on this wall. I've come up with 33" corner, 3" spacer, 27" oven cabinet, 3" spacer and 36" refig. or exchange the 6" of spacers with a cabinet for sheet pans (shown as wine rack below). I could also shrink the 27" oven to 24" and get a 9" base for better sheet pan storage. I am concerned about the depth difference between the tall cabinet and base/wall so close to the corner.

I'd like to hear your opinions. Below are renditions (ignore colors & trim). I am focusing on layout. Also are the other areas if you want to comment on those areas as well. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!!

Photos of existing conditions. I actually grew to love the orange counter. I will miss it. Red wall on right will be removed to expand into open space.

to the left of the 15" wall cabinet next to the hood in the 3D rendition is a hallway. I cannot expand that left wall, unfortunately.

If you can get away with a 24” oven cabinet, I’d do that.
Are the 27” corner cabinets deeper than the rest? Hope not.

Do you require that plumbing and appliances remain in their current locations? How many people work in your space and how frequently do you cook? How large of a refrigerator do you need?

@emilyam819 yes the corner uppers are deeper in the schematic but that wasn't intentional. They should be the typical depth. I can go change that.

@newideas no I do not require the plumbing & electrical to stay, but it's preferred as the house was built as a lakefront cabin and plumbing/electrical changes are a challenge. I am the only cook and do it frequently. It's just my husband and I (no kids) but we entertain here and there, mostly in the summer. Other than a transient person looking to get snacks or wanting to help while I'm cooking, it's only me in the kitchen. We have a bar downstairs to take care of cocktails while I'm cooking. My current layout actually functions well except for the pantry immediately next to range. No counter space to the left. We like the size of the fridge and often fill it when we entertain.

Would you consider voiding the corner where you show a 33" base cabinet and adding that space to wider drawers on the DW side, and a wider cabinet for sheet pans on the fridge wall, or wider drawers under the steam oven? (You'll still need filler in the corner.)

Wider drawers will store anything you'd planned to keep in the corner cabinet. What's behind the fridge wall? You might be able to reclaim that corner void in the other room. Since the stub wall will be removed, will you have a surround built for the fridge?

I would also suggest drawers for the other base cabinets.

@mama goose_gw zn6OH I have heard a lot of people recommend drawers in place of corner susans and open to the idea, but the kitchen is soooo small I am concerned about losing space - even hard to reach space as I have no where else to hide things. As you can see, my tall husband likes to put things on top of the cabinets which drives me NUTS. Right now my susan's have bulk items like flour/sugar/extra paper towels etc and heavy cast iron pans.

I've toyed with the idea of removing the top portion of the right wall opening it up to the foyer (main entrance to the right of the barn door closet), but again I am afraid of losing the storage in the upper cabinets and my fridge would have to go on the other wall and I could not adequate vent the range if moved it to the created peninsula.

See pics of the wall leading to the foyer. I put boxes up to simulate the encroachment into the living space to see if the line of sight and non symmetry with the other wall bothers me.

Thanks for the comment. I will consider drawers.

A “designer” isn’t necessarily a kitchen planner. If this is your kitchen, we need a measured floorplan to see what you are working with. Tell us how big your family is, if you entertain regularly, and what is missing in this kitchen besides more space.

@felizlady thank you. I did comment in response to @Newideas on my family (just my husband & myself) and entertainment frequency (mostly in the summer). Since this is a lake house we don't spend a lot of entertainment time inside - low use kitchen primarily for myself. Dimensions below
