How can I jazz up this basement kitchen??

We're close to being done with the basement, but the kitchenette is looking kind of bland. I realize everythign looks bland when it's drywalled, but I'm regretting not having it bump out more into the room to be more snazzy. The idea is to add a wood treatment to the beam, add a simple bar top and stools, base cabinets along the back with some floating shelves.


Main issues: should we bump the bar wall out to make it stand out more against the long flat adjacent wall, or would the bar top create good enough division to create a "kitchen space". Should we add more of a soffit along the top to help with this? Just curious how others would make any changes here before its too late.
