Crowning a Clump Queen

last modified: 5 years ago

Reckless Girls wins the award in my garden for clump with the most blooms. Today it had 20 blooms, beating out Spanish Glow that had 18 about a week ago. The Tribble With Blue and SC Francis Busby were in the running with 16 flowers each.

All of My Love to You has been through clumps with 7-9 flowers per day for two weeks now.

Techny Peace is taller and multiplying now that I've moved it.

Keepsake Rosie is blooming later than usual.

Minstrel Singer is blooming quite late too.

Strawberry Alarm Clock will be blooming most of July.

Freudian Slip just had its last bloom.

The Dominator has never multiplied much. It's still three fans.

Seedling (Palace Garden Beuaty X Karelia) x This Longing 1

Cexy Samantha x Bubblegum Delicious #1 - I took this photo this afternoon at 2:30 when it was 92 degrees, so you can see it's holding its color pretty well. This lavender pink is the best budded of the cross and has 13 buds in its first year. It's the only one of the four sibs that is not rose pink. #2 is the best multiplier, with four fans, but it only had 11 buds.

Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine #2 is the first daylily in my garden to attain 40 buds this year. It has 40 buds on one scape, and 27 and 29 on the others. My husband took this photo of it at 6:30 p.m. after a very humid 91-degree day.

A clum[p queen and a bud queen! Lovely blooms, Debra. ?We continue to have rain every day at least part of the day. I will probably post once more and that will do it.

kay - I envy all that rain you're getting. The showers always seem to be south or east of us.

The Queen reigns! What a wonderful shot! Its great to see your lovely seedlings performing so well day after day! It is honestly hard for me to pick a favorite seedling.…I love the colors. Would you like me to post photos of your plants that have bloomed this season, registered or not?

Sherry - I would love to see photos of all the plants you got from me! All three of the seedlings I posted should be registrations in future years.

That certainly qualifies as a clump queen!! Beautiful!!! Mine was Stardust Dragon which had 26 blooms one day. However, it is not a bud builder so although every day with 10, 12, 15, 20 blooms is something to behold, it is bloomed out in a week or so!! A literal flash in the pan!!

Techny Peace is lovely and Keepsake Rosie has wonderful color. You always have such pretty photos of The Dominator. Is it a slow multiplier or a grub victim?

I love the seedlings. That last one is such a pretty shade of pink. Hope that bud count holds up because that is great. Your seedlings have really been special this year.

Kate - Stardust Dragon must have been magnificent with 26 flowers. Too bad it blooms out so quickly. Reckless Girls blooms for three to four weeks here. The Dominator has been a repeated grub victim, as has nearly everything in my front garden. That's where the giant Junebug grubs are. I think the 40-bud seedling gets even prettier as the day wears on.

Reckless Girls sure makes an imposing clump. My All My Love to You was 4 fans last fall, came back as one fan this spring, so disappointing. I am glad you posted The Dominatore, really pretty. I love the Palace Garden Beauty seedling.

Looking at clump shots such as Reckless Girls (amazing) it's hard to believe you have to fight grubs so much. Everything looks so productive.........I think your Palace Garden seedling looks so pretty. I'm not a eye/off white color fan usually, but it's got so much going for it. Looks like Happy Happy should have been in the mix with those edges........I'm beginning to weaken a bit and find I'm liking that pinched petal look on occasion IF it is consistent and symmetrical on the bloom. Your picture of Freudian Slip gets my attention...............Maryl

Nancy - Sorry about your losing fans on All of My Love to You. Once I got mine in the ground, it multiplied and performed well. It spent three years growing in a pot, but never increased during its pot life.

Maryl - If you saw Reckless Girls in person, you would know the grubs got to it too. It's about 7 inches shorter than it should be.

Nancy and Maryl - Thanks for the commend about the Palace Garden Beauty seedling!

Wow, those Reckless Girls! What showoffs. Beautiful.

I also like your last seedling.

Reckless Girls looks fantastic. Amazed at all those blooms. First seedling pic with that long cross name is wonderful. I've never seen an edge like that. Special indeed.

Brad - Reckless Girls are showoffs! I'm glad you liked the last seedling.

Julia - Reckless Girls is well-budded and well-branched and has multiplied well over the years. The seedling you like does have a special edge. I only know of a couple of registered daylilies with edges like it - one is Fancy Needlework and the other is a Stamile whose name I've forgotten.
