ILoveMod - Unfortunately the carpet has stains and also fading related to where our old furniture was placed. We are having my daughter’s wedding at our house in a few months and the carpet is so dreadful we need to replace it before the wedding.

Spanish - Like your recommendation, will see if I can get a sample the same or similar to your example and try it out in the room.

What I would do is buy a large area rug to lay on top of the old carpet, which is what many people do. Your room is the perfect size to layer rugs.

This page will give you good ideas You can always use some of the colors you want in the updated LR. A rug with some color and print wil hide most stains. Indoor Outdoor carpeting is very popular right now to use in LR's.

Oakley, Thank you for the link. I had thought about a rug as well, I remember my great aunt had a huge beautiful rug on top of her carpeting, it was fabulous. My worry is that the rug would have to be very large, basically take up the entire width of the room as the worst stain is on the side of the carpet right next to the dining room. It appears that someone spilled a full glass of red wine at a party and never told us.

I second Spanish's suggestion. We had a wool sisal-look in our MBR but it was not easy to clean; I've since read that wool is harder to clean than synthetic. We got it in LostLocket, you may want a darker color

I'm sure if you googled how to get out a wine stain you'll come up with a lot of ideas. No one will be looking at the edge of the carpet, they'll be looking at your new rug. Get it in a size where you can use it in another room later, maybe the dining room.

It will save you a lot of time and money, and you'll end up with a rug for somewhere else. If that's what you decide, do it soon so you can have it all laying flat before the wedding. :)

Looking at your carpet again, it looks to be pretty clean unless there are spots all over it which I can't see. A rug will bring the room together and not make it seem so empty. No need for a huge rug and I wouldn't put the piano on it either.

See if someone or maybe yourself can do a mock up so you can see what size would work.

Have you looked into this? Reupholstery is usually more expensive than buying new. Especially if you only want a creamy white - you can find that easily.

Mtn - Yes, I did talk to a reupholsterer that we have used in the past and his price was less than the same sofa new, by a decent amount. However, I did talk to him before Covid, so I do need to check with him again. But l really like this sofa, it is so comfortable, and always has been. We have had it for many years and it is in great shape other than the fabric fading.

I agree with jinx idea, a subtle pattern carpet and then to help balance the carpet and wood, add a rug in the dining area. Seems you are just done with the current carpet and want new. You have beautiful furniture pieces, I hope you find a spot for some of them.

Decisions, decisions. Thanks to this group, I have some ideas now. For some reason I do not have vision for this house. My last house I always knew what I wanted to do, this one not so much.

Theresa is right. Not sure when we will be replacing the wood floors. Planned to do it this year but then we decided to buy a place in the desert, so the floors have been pushed back to an unknown future date. But I still want to have the living room look the best it can under the curcumstances, for the wedding and just in general.

If you aren't sure you are redoing all the floors, I do agree that an area rug in the DR area would work nicely because right now the stark difference divides the room. If you find a nice rug you like and carpet the LR, then maybe you will decide not to redo either floor... since it's not like any of he stop-gap choices will be inexpensive, really.

My carpet was a compromise based on cost. I would have liked a more texture but the price was double.

Photo below - Color is off a bit. The carpet is warmer than pictured, a golden beige/tan, not a pinky gray as it appears here, and the walls are not as yellow.

The wedding is coming up fast, it is the 23rd. Still lots to do. We do not have any part of the wedding taking place in the living room, guests will just pass through on the way to the our back patio and decks. We are moving different furniture into the living room for the day. We have two couches that we purchased last year which normally live in our family room, they will be moved to the living room along with two chairs. One sofa is a turquoise tweed and the other is an off-white velvet, both Crate and Barrel Keely sofas so they should work well. Out family room is off our deck and will be used for the buffet, so we are removing the furniture. Thinking this will work out well for the day and it will allow me to have more options for our long term living room.
