Hood to go with Wolf 36" contemporary cooktop

Any advice on a hood to go with a Wolf 36" gas contemporary cooktop?

Burner specs:

  • 2 - 9,200 Btu Burner
  • 2 - 12,000 Btu Burner
  • 1 - 20,000 Btu Burner

Behind the cooktop is a currently the backside of our living room fireplace. So it looks like brick, but we are going to put a tile backsplash over the brick that runs up to the 8' ceiling. Because the wall behind the cooktop is our fireplace, I'm not sure if we'd need to get a wall mount or ceiling mount hood.... as we probably don't want to be putting holes into the fireplace? The cabinets in our galley kitchen will be slab style made of oak. No uppers on the side with the cooktop.

Our roof is pretty low, so I would think that we'd probably just have the vent run straight up through the roof, unless the contractor recommends a better way. I have not done all my hood/venting research. I honestly don't use my current fan enough, but I don't like the noise and I'm not sure it does much. It's original from then 1950's and is surely not to any current code. It looks like a little fan that a squirrel could power. lol

So thinking we need at least 600-700 CMF?

Is 36" wide enough? Looks like 42" would probably be smarter?

For styling I was thinking along these lines:

Thanks for any advice!

42 inches wide will provide better capture. Assume 42 x 24, then the hood entry area is roughly 3.5 x 2 = 7 sq. ft. Allocate 90 CFM/sq. ft. to yield 630 CFM (actual). Blower rating should be in the range of 1.5X that or between 900 and 1000 CFM. Duct should be at least 8 inch diameter. If there is room in the duct path for a silencer, then a roof blower will be fairly well quieted.

You will need a make-up air plan that will depend on the presence or not of combustion appliances. Preliminary understanding can be had by searching 'MUA' here.

I have the back of our FP as my range wall in my kitchen I would never think to cover it it has that awesome juxtaposition of very mmodern and rustic stone.Uour hood id the same size as our range does an awesome job of venting straight up through the roof ii is a vent-a-hood 1200 CFM yes it is noisy but really only for as long as you are cooking and IMO really not worth spending the money on to make it a bit quieter. My range is a 6 burner all gas with a wok burner no isse with it being the same size as the range you just need to up the CFM a bit if you are going staright up.

Oh cool! Our fireplace is a similar size rock fireplace with brick on the backside. We are actually going to keep the brick area to the left of the cooktop to retain some of the old (probably will put shelves in the cubby for cookbooks), but doing a stacked tile behind the cooktop to bring in some new.

@hapahaole how is the cooktop working for you? do you recommend it?

Well it was working great. i really liked it. only issue i would say is tgat sometimes we’d lean against the knobs on accident and they would click trying to ignite. There was some problem with the oven on install as welll but not the cootop’s fault. They installers were able to fix it on a return visit.

Unfortunely our home was damaged in the recent LA fires and most of our house has been taken down to studs. i think ill he getting the ssme cooktop again thouh!

I’m so sorry about your house, I hope your repair goes smoothly. that is so unfortunate.
