I see some photos where the homes look like they’ve not been cleaned / decluttered in quite some time - doesn’t do much for the appeal, for sure (though I have to perhaps give realtors the benefit of the doubt that they may have asked the homeowner to clean up and the homeowner may have the “take it or leave it” mentality)

I have a friend who's a hoarder. It's pretty bad and I've oftened wondered how a realtor would deal with the sale of her home. There's no way they could show anyone that house as is.

Omg this drives me batty! Why can’t people pick up before the photos are taken! And I do blame the realtors, they should know better and make sure the photos are taken of a clean house. I’m a realtor and would never allow a dirty or messy house to even be photographed, let alone put up on the MLS!

I've been watching real estate postings in my area go nuts (just for entertainment, we are not moving anywhere), and it's amazing the photos that get posted. I figure that's putting the best foot forward, whatever that may be. And yes! Shut the lid! Close the closet doors! Shove the junk to one side for the photo! Etc.!

And K R says it.... was just looking at a listing today and wondered, why on earth the listing realtor made that selection of photos, and thought gee if we ever list, mental note not to hire that person (while wondering why/how they didn't have any other, or more, photos to choose from). And then figured -- that's the best that house has -- don't want/need to see the rest of it!

Saw this pic in a listing last year and about fell out of my chair 😂.

I am Realtor.com stalker!!!! I nearly got my license years ago. I didn't and I regret it when I see my local listing. I would kick them to the curb with their terrible photo's and I don't understand why sellers allow this.

As a former Realtor, some sellers can be very challenging and don’t always take the advice given about cleaning and decluttering. And, some of the horrible pictures taken, those very well may have been the best rooms to show. The things I saw!

YES!!! I would be embarrassed to post pics where everything is a disaster.

Not just the seat - the lid needs to be down also. A toilet with the lid up is just as bad as one with the seat up.

Actually, a good RE photographer can do perfectly good bathroom pictures without even showing the toilet. We all pretty well know what they look like.

Whenever someone says that, I think, you're grown, why are you apologizing for living your life? Especially when you've just moved in or are in the middle of renovations. Stop being sorry for not being perfect - no one is - even all you perfectionists. But if you are trying to sell....have it neat and tidy and no unmentionables in the photo.

Lol, my house isn't perfect, but I'd still pick up the dirty laundry before I took a picture. And those are the kinds of pictures I was referring to. There is a difference between being a slob, and being in the middle of a renovation.

Funny, I'm not sure it even would occur to me whether the toilet was open or closed unless that was relevant to the picture (my pictures or others'); that being said, I don't do much toilet photography. I expect real estate agents to be better than me.

I do shove unnecessary stuff out of the way and tidy the bed before pictures (you know, tidy bed making, not just toss the quilt on top; actually arrange/fluff the pillows; move some of the extra objects from the table/nightstand/counter/floor). I get "ignore the mess" when its midrenovation (I try not to touch/move contractor's stuff unless they know I'm using the space and might move it), or if there are dog toys or something (though I expect to see the doggy too if they're not gathered to their basket for the picture ... animals make for good pictures, lol). The bags of chips or stacks of paper should be moved out of frame unless the question is how to organize the stuff. I don't expect total perfection, just moving distractions and dirty dishes. I don't judge on weedy garden pictures because that's a much bigger project than just moving the clutter. I'm impressed by some of the gardens that clearly get weeded almost daily.

Thanks for the clarification, I did mean lid. What bothers me is when the lid is up. It doesn't look neat.
