Cradle of Bethlehem

I think the pineapple lilies look especially nice this year. These are from a bag of mixed bulbs from a box store

In the 1st pic with COB, you can see my dark one. Blooms are not as big, and color always fades by July/August. In spring it is very dark.

Cradle of Bethlehem is one that certainly changes as the temps change. In the morning it is dark with a green throat and then the throat changes to the yellow you see in your picture. Of course it does not help that in my garden it faces Western sun all afternoon!! Your picture of the clump is really nice. The pineapple lilies are very interesting. They certainly make a striking contrast to anything you have planted with them. I am not sure I have ever seen them in local gardens.

Nice clump of Cradle of Bethlehem. I'd be happy with that.......I've thought about trying Eucomis (Pineapple Lily) some time. I particularly like the one with the burgandy foliage. The flowers themselves are so very pretty as your picture shows. Wonderful that you found these in a box store. You never know where you'll find something you love........Maryl

Thank you all! My only complaint of Cradle of Bethlehem is it is a vigorous grower. I got it from Laura fall of 19 I think, and she was generous with the fans. I now have 2 clumps with over 10 fans each. I moved one last fall and it has let me know it is nor as happy in its new spot, but I think it will get over it.

Maryl, the darkest Eucomis is a named variet, Sparkling Burgundy, I got from Brent and Becky's a few years ago. There are some from box stores that has fairly dark foliage with pink blooms, but Sparkling Burgundy is my favorite. Sherry, I think zone 6 is as far as pineapple lilies are listed hardy. If you do come across them at a box store, it would be worth trying and plant close to your house or a protected area. I grow a few bulbs or plants that do well that suggested for zone 7 or even 8. These have been quite h ardy here and have gone thru below 0 temps. You might even do better. I think my plants would do better with snow

Nancy: Cradle of Bethlehem is great in a clump. Glad you posted that pic. Good to know about Eucomis. I've not ever seen it in the box stores in NY but perhaps with a different location maybe I'll see some here locally. Would make a good filler in the perennial bed.
