Reduce the height of the bushes by the bay window, so that they are below the bottom of the bay. Add an arbor over the garages, with or with out a vine growing on them. Add an ornamental tree out in the yard centered on the area to the left side of the bay.

@houssaon would you suggest changing the soffit and fascia or any of the trim around the porch/door(even the door itself)? a little intimidated to change anything but just seems too bland currently

What can/ are you willing to change? Are the windows vinyl? Can the grids pop out?

@HALLETT & Co.the windows are white vinyl, were replaced after this picture so they are newer -- i do not believe that they can pop out

I think the windows look so much better without the shutters. I just tried the dark gray on the triangle in the gable and over the bay. I don't like it. I think the white looks better. You have a relatively dark brick so white looks good with it.

I really do like the suggestion of painting the porch ceiling a light blue. It is often referred to as "haint" blue. Any light subtle blue will do. Both my entry and my screened in porch are painted blue and for some reason I find it very calming.

I like a gold for your front door.

With white windows do what houssaon shows- all trim white, something dark on the garage doors, something fun on main door, get rid of the shutters.

I do like the white trim with your brick. Removing the shutters will be a big improvement. houssaon is right regarding the windows being the wrong style for them, especially the bay window where they make no sense at all. You have a nice house with nice brick!

This would be my suggestion as well. It has a more cohesive appearance in my opinion.

I also happen to like the shutters. To me, without them there is something missing unless the windows are changed out all together, which would be a more expensive option.

Saw this 'before and after' split level and couldn't believe the difference.

We had the same issue with our newly purchased Tennessee house so last year we darkened it up and eliminated all the white. The dark color is SW Urbane Bronze which really created some drama and toned down the house. We picked two other colors that were slightly lighter for the shutters and another for the soffits. Nothing but compliments from the neighbors. It really relaxes the look of the house and eliminates the starkness of the white. The roof is black. I also removed the pediment from over the front door.

SW Black Fox is another good color to consider

I guess I am old-fashioned. The dark colors of grey and charcoal, seem ominous, Darth Vader abode and cold, prison-like! The windows are not particularly interesting, distinguished OR appropriate for a split level, especially the ones hanging over the huge garage doors. And as many have already said and I concur, the bay window while a misguided attempt to add archtectural interest, is there and expensive to change. So why allow any of this falderal to stand out in any way.? Instead I would add some joy and paint all the now-white windows, shutters and trim, plus the garage doors -- a brick red? That will help it all to recede and kind of disappear. Pick out a red from the existing brick around the garage portion of the house. i would add a lot more landscape features. Natural elements, an elegant Japanese maple tree, more shrubs, a curved walkway made of stone slabs and beds strategicalky placed out in the lawn, will add to the overall appearance of your property. Create some beauty that way. The lawn is only a testiment to how good your lawn mower and watering routine are. Stay away from straight lines. Have a little fun.

I like what Celery has done with the coloration. A couple of suggestions that would add impact are as follows

1. ‘Beef up’ the front pillars, they look puny in proportion to the entry.
2. Those shutters are too narrow for the windows. Shutters, before they became merely a decorative feature, were used to cover the windows for protection or maintaining internal temperatures. They should be wide enough so they could cover the entire window opening. This is a common mistake, since most people buy off the shelf shutters in standard sizes. It throws the proportions off since you have a large window. Custom sized wooden shutters are available online.

If you are not painting the brick, the wood trim stands out, so enhancing what you have is the way to go. You could add a pop of color with the front door and placing large pots that repeat your chosen color on each side of the garage and the entry door.

The charcoal on the garage doors is nice, and I would do some shade of aqua on the front door as Lyn Nielson suggested.

Noté that a black roof absorbs more heat than a light-colored roof and this can increase the heat in the house

We are also at the point that we want to think about changing our outside a little…our brick is a similar color….a little more brownish brick than red and I’m trying to find colors that blend really well w the brownish goldish brick. It’s a pretty look but so is contrasting colors as already mentioned. I’d love to do the German Schmear treatment they call it…it gives a whitewashed look to your brick but expensive I’m sure. But I think once u do it u don’t have to again…unlike paint which has to be done more often to look good. Also…some of the little awnings over the windows…not the old times ones but the ones that sort of slant out over the top of the window. I’ll look for some pics to add. Good luck to you.
