Bathroom re-do DIY advice

last modified: 5 years ago

I hate this bathroom. It‘s in the main hallway for guests, but also used as the kids bathroom. Would it make a big difference if I painted the wood white and removed the piece over the toilet? We don‘t really need the storage and I feel like its too big and heavy. I also wanted to swap the mirror for an oval one, without a frame. Thoughts? Ideas? Thank you!!

I don't like cabinets over the toilet either. So take it down. You might find that you have to paint afterward. Paint the vanity white. I would keep the mirror and paint the frame white too.

    Good luck.

What do YOU hate about it? Identifying that will better help direct your options. I'd start with the easiest change first then reassess. I wouldn't be tempted to paint the vanity as it looks (on my screen at least) to harmonize very well with the floor and counter. Painting cabinets can be a pain with iffy results but if wanting a white vanity, make sure it's not an overly cool white. Otherwise, it will clash with the counter and floor. To my amateur eye, this bathroom is pretty inoffensive (and looks way more cohesive than my main bath...!) so I don't really "get" the hate. :) That said, what I would change first would be to replace the thick bath mat (I find them a pita to launder) with a thinner one (but it's got to function with kids). I'd also reassess the wall decor. Larger pieces of art would have more design impact. It all depends on the style goal for the space. The toilet has elegant classic lines while the vanity and above toilet cabinet have more casual ones. Without seeing a picture of the whole mirror wall, it's hard to say how an oval mirror would fare there. Did you have a mirror in mind? Frameless mirrors can look "unfinished".

If you hate the cabinet above the toilet, then remove it. You will probably have to paint, so I would do the whole bathroom in a very light (almost white) version of the green in the shower curtain. Make sure it is a "warm" shade. Larger art. Then reassess. I like the wood and mirror as is but you live there so you will need to decide. If you do change the mirror for a frameless, be sure it is beveled so that it looks finished.

@tartanmeup I guess I don‘t like the heaviness of the vanity and piece above the toilet. Also the floor, which I can’t redo now, because it always looks dirty. This was all here when we bought the house. The heater needs a redo also because its looking rusted. The mirror is also super heavy so if i got a beveled mirror from Home Goods, something not so blah, maybe I wouldnt have to paint the vanity. I’m afraid I‘ll ruin it more than make it better. 🤦‍♀️

We had a similar ugh bathroom. Replaced the over the sink mirror with a wall mounted 30x24 medicine cabinet, a Koehler purchased at Lowe’s. Interior and door backs are also mirrored and it’s only 5 inches deep so over-mounted wall lighting fixture still lights with no shadows. Solved the storage issue and guests are always very complementary about the improved look of the previous ugh bath.

You could just remove/replace cabinet with art and add a new mirror, but more of a transformation wouldn’t be expensive or very difficult. First decision is whether to paint vanity or not, as other decor choices will depend on that. I’d paint walls white and use a white shower curtain/towels.

Easy to add tile over what you have. You could alternatively add a large, impactful mat.

I think taking down the cabinet and replacing the mirror are good ideas. Would not paint the vanity but paint the walls in the color suggested here, paint the heater the same color. Your shower curtain is pretty. Do you need the big towel bar or can you get by with just hooks? I would put a big piece of art where the towel bar is. If it's the grout making your floor look dirty, try cleaning it with white vinegar, let it sit, then dish soap and baking soda in some water and scrub with a stiff brush. If that doesn't work, buy some grout paint and paint it.

These are all such great ideas!! Thank you all so much! I love the mockups and actually dont love the white vanity, so I’ll start with removing the storage and mirror. I’m not all in on the shower curtain so that can change. Any thoughts on wallpaper??

I added one more photo of the mirror so you can see the size.

I love wall paper in the bath, if you find something you love.

I think wallpaper is a commitment, so “No”is my opinion. Paint color and art work are easily changed as your needs, wants, tastes change. But I like easily changing things up every couple of years. This is why everyone’s input is interesting. Everyone sees and likes something different. It’s your home...do what brings You comfort and joy.

I vote for keeping the vanity as it is, but changing the hardware to brass. Add brass lighting and plumbing hardware, too. The best looking bathroom is the one rendered in green, above. I think your shower curtain is lovely! Bring the white in with towels, rug, etc. Botanical art on the wall above the toilet would look nice, too. Then, assess the mirror. Perhaps you will find it works well. If not…perhaps something else. You want to refresh your bathroom…and you can do it pretty inexpensive lay this way.

Not a pro - but I agree with removing the cabinet, swapping the mirror, and like the green paint with your curtain. The wood vanity, granite and floor work well together so I'd avoid changing those.

How many and how old are your kids? If they are young and will be "growing into" the bathroom, you may want more storage in the future. Perhaps a train rack style towel shelf in place of the cabinet, where you'll be able to stack extra towels or add a pair of woven baskets to keep extra toiletries. And you might look into whether a frameless medicine cabinet would work in place of your mirror.

Where do you hang hand towels - is that what is currently hanging inside the cabinet door? If so, consider adding a towel ring or hook on one side to replace it so the door will close.

If the hair dryer is used regularly, see if you can retrofit a drawer with an inside outlet to eliminate that cord draped over the counter. These are pricey, but a great solution - I love the one I have.

I suspect what you dislike might be the color contrast drawing visual attention where you don't particularly want it. Painting all the brown/wood finish -- cabinet, vanity, mirror frame -- white could resolve that.

Paint the mirror frame the same color white as your door trim and turn the mirror horizontally. With more space beneath the mirror, you might even add a very shallow white shelf beneath it.

While you could remove the cabinet over the toilet tank you dislike (and, if you don't use it elsewhere, consider donating it to Habitat for Humanity or a charity sponsored thrift store supporting a cause of which you approve). Or ...

You could try painting that cabinet the same white color as the door trim and so the color contrast between it an wall will not be as drastic ... making it more visually disappear.

If you keep it, you could hang a short towel bar beneath and consider that cabinet to be your first aid cabinet -- using it only for storing first aid items (bandages, gauze, tape, antibiotic cream, etc., ) to make it more useful.

Your bathroom is crowded and busy to me. Remove cab over toilet. Paint walls white. White shower curtain.
No items on back of toilet. No items on counter. Reassess at this point. No cab over toilet will make this room feel bigger. White shower curtain will do the same. Currently, counter and curtain compete, too busy. Live with it for a week or two. Then think about the new frameless, beveled mirror. Then think about white vanity or not. Happy thinking!
