Back for more help. Painting raw wood.

I'm back for more help. I started working on the maple butcher block top and now looking for help with painting the base for the table. We made a new base out of wood we already had on hand. I think it's that whitewood that Lowes sells. What is the best primer and paint to use on bare wood? What sheen to use? Gloss is too glossy so was thinking of going semi gloss. My daughter wants the base either a teal or turquoise color. Should the primer be tinted? Once painted is there any kind of top coat that should be applied to make it more durable? Products have to be something I can pick up at Lowes. Any help is appreciated.
