Ummmm....NO CHARGE on something that MOST professionals charge $5/sf - $15/sf to do????

And why would it reduce the dust??? The first two cuts have to be done anyway. And then 2 DAYS to complete 900sf??? Wow!

I have so many red flags and alarm bells going off in my head my neighbors can hear them!

If he is ALREADY CHARGING you $15/sf for refinishing, then go ahead and get the hand scraped...you've over paid for the work.

If you are paying $5/sf (normal price for OIL BASED polyurethane) then you are pushing the price envelope. If he has a crew doing this, imagine the poor people and the wage they HAVE to live off of??

And 2 days is a bit too fast if you have any stains or want three coats of poly on the floor (which is par for the course...2 coats causes PLENTY of homeowners to complain about the lack of durability).

Not a general contractor. I did plenty of research on flooring companies and this one has an excellent reputation. I didn't want handscraped floors anyway but the thought that it could produce less dust at no additional cost pulled me in. However, as I began to research it didn't make sense. I'll be calling them today. It's possible I have misunderstood something. Thanks!

UPDATE... I got the hand scraped floors. Yep, no additional charge and they look stunning. I thought I had red oak but it's actually white oak. I chose Chesnut. Could have gone a little lighter but special walnut looked a little washed out beside the chestnut sample. It was a 3-day job, not two as I originally thought although the water poly coats were drying on the third day. Crew of at least 10. Not as dusty as I was expecting or maybe I'm just not seeing it!

So glad you like your floors! They've done a great job. How long ago did they finish? What product finish did they go with?

As far as I know they used all Duraseal products, ending with satin water-based poly.

I am looking for someone to handscrape my existing floor.
