Can water lily grow without soil?

Dear all,

I’ve recently purchased some water lily seeds from online store. I planned to grow them in a pot with just water. Can water lily grow purely on water? Or with soil better?

How do I fertilise the plant?

Please advise. I would love to hear from you.

A lily’s roots need to be anchored in something; soil, clay, gravel, ceramic ”soil”, etc. I’ve never fertilized mine.

I often get waterlily seedlings floating around. They eventually need to be anchored as they don't grow so well.

Gravel and stones would be alright, I supposed? To anchor the roots? Since I’m planting them in a pot, it’s not going to be that big.

Do you have Koi? They’re pretty notorious for digging up plants. So, if you do, I’d go with larger stones on top. An established lily will grow well out of its pot.

Nope no koi. I’m not planning to put fishes yet. If I do, it’ll be of small species 😊 so I guess gravel n stones should be alright for me?
