Looks like a Japanese Maple seedling?

I found two of these seedlngs on my property. They are tiny, but you can't really miss seeing them because of their red coloring. Please confirm what you think it is.

You cannot grow a JM in a container and leave it outside unprotected in winter in a zone 6 climate!! JM roots are very sensitive to cold damage and the temps one would encounter over winter in a container in z6 is pretty much guaranteed to kill them. If you grow on in a container for a couple of seasons before planting, the maple must be placed somewhere it receives cold protection in winter.

Well, that's cool! I am going to pot them both up and see how far I can grow them on.

I potted up a chestnut tree last year and overwintered it. It looks cute, but I am not planning to grow it on my property. I'll find a new home for it eventually. I found an oak seedling and had potted it up. One day a squirrel(?) beheaded the plant and stole the acorn. So you never know what is going to happen!

back in the day.. everything sold as JM bloodgood were just seedlings ... and that looks like a seedling bloodgood.. at this age anyway ...

i wonder if they still sell seedlings as bloodgood.. anyone have that random knowledge handy??

since JMs are rather smallish trees .. you could probably grow it in a pot for a very long time.. with some basic bonsai type root pruning to keep it somewhat in check ...

just protect the pot from too much moisture in winter ... just tip it on its side ...

I hadn't given it much thought as to what I was going to do with it for the winter! And I don't find it good to put small pots in a shed to overwinter. I find they dry out too fast. So maybe I should just bury the pot?

I don't gave a mature bloodgood JM. I have Crimson Queen. But I think my neighbor may have a bloodgood. So perhaps the seed is from their tree.

Seedling might just as well have come from Crimson Queen as from Bloodgood. First leaves will not necessarily be characteristic and it may not even turn out to be red colored all season.

And because it is a seedling, it has no specific ID. It is just a no-name JM seedling.

Well, it's kind of cool just waiting and watching plants transform. I'd love it to be red colored most of the season. So I have to be patient and give it time to grow!
