DIY workstation sink? - tips, please!

Hey all,

After much time searching for the unicorn workstation sink in my size, features, and budget, I concede defeat— the market doesn’t yet make exactly what I seek.

So, I’m changing tack and planning to DIY it by installing a ”regular” stainless sink with my ideal specs and doing an undermount with positive reveal.

I hope to add on the after-market accessories which our family will use the most (a roll-up drain mat, colander/ strainer basket, and maybe asking a friend for a handmade cutting board). Maybe after a while, also some kind of ledge or step for the sink bottom as so many modern-look sinks are so deep (rant!!).

Who’s done this before and can share tips, pictures, and lessons learned? Thanks!

We do this regularly in my sink replacement business. Just make sure the sink has a large enough flange that you can leave at least 1/2" under the stone after you've cut your reveal. Strap your sink please, no clips or blocking.

The roll up drain mat is easy. You can get one on amazon.

The colander is also easy - also available most stores, and in many different configurations.

For a cutting board, I wouldn't bother trying to match it to your sink reveal. Just get one wide enough to cover your sink and put grippers on the bottom so it won't slide.

Not sure about the ledge...I guess I'm not understanding what's wrong with a deep sink, or why you'd need a ledge or step?

@Joseph Corlett, LLC - we will be installing a drop in utility sink soon. It will be in a slab of butcher block. Do you think we need more support than the sides/flanges give? Until now we have had a large wall mounted fiberglass tub. This is the unit we chose. Thanks.

Anj_p - good idea on the cutting board, thanks. Re: depth I’ve been concerned that a 10” deep sink is going to be annoying (I hand wash a lot of small baby cups etc.). It’s been hard to find 9” deep sinks with the small-radius rounded rectangle corners that I like and a size that feels good. I saw a few Elkay Crosstown in stock but think we’re going Kraus in the end because we loved the sound deadening and other features.

Side note: It’s been frustratingly hard to shop for sinks given how polarized the reviews are—like printers, everyone seems to hate or love their sink and for myriad reasons (but sinks are much less easily replaced!). Just gotta pick one and make some concessions I guess!
