modern pool landscaping South Florida- need help please

Hi,

I am looking for advice/suggestions for plants to put around my South Florida pool. Presently, I have agave blue glow but one by one they are dying (consensus is there is not enough drainage and they are prone to fungus. Some thrive, some die though they are obviously in the same conditions). The planter has drainage for sure and is filled with regular soil. I would love something modern, low maintenance that can take the full sun and occasional splash. Ideally, it can get higher (up to three feet since I don't want to block the water view but want a little privacy from passing boats). Given that the fence is there, it needs to be primarily vertical. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

Something tall and skinny for passing boats or passing gators?

How about the common house plant False Aralia, Plerandra elegantissima. The other aralias that are not the genus aralia either that are worth looking into are Polyscias fruticosa cultivars.

I would not plant them as a hedge, only as vertical accent in the bromeliads. This may be more a tropical look than modern. Tropical Mawdernn

There are bromeliads that will take full sun. They have the same basic form as the agave and should do better with the poor drainage. The one caveat is mosquitoes can breed in the cups. There is a larvicide for that. Find a reputable bromeliad seller in the area and check those out as a possibility. They come in lots of colors.

Thanks, Christopher. I thought bromeliads mostly faded in full sun, but I'll look into ones that don't. Anything you would plant to accompany them, for a little height?

Horsetail reed is extremely invasive. I would never plant it.

I initially considered horsetail reed after seeing the pictures of it in modern spaces. I first planted it in a container in the outdoor kitchen (see below) thinking it would be easy to maintain since its water loving. It did not thrive and ended up so straggly so I replaced it with a snake plant which is doing just fine in full sun. Papyrus is pretty cool looking....
