@HU. Liking your idea. Would the island go where the wall to the left is or set back closer to the window ?

Get a free design from Lowe’s and then shop around. They can show you the options and layout with different cabinet sizes and appliances. I did that then went to a local builder to order Manta

I would do the island centered to the room. Which I assume will be closer to the window wall...

The Island needs to be 42-48" away from the the cabinets on the window wall

The room is 9 - 9.5' wide. It will not be having an island. I would investigate the "thing" and see if it could be removed or covered with drywall instead of the current boards. It's a great big visual pimple that could be completely fake.

What you could do is have slightly deeper cabinets (27-30") and a longer run (1-2 feet) on the exterior wall. Heresy I know, but you could also extend the wall between the room with carpet and the kitchen and narrow the opening down to a reasonable size and add another foot or so of length. Think about those and then play appliance bingo on the "L" shaped run and the separate small wall. Get a good eraser.

Someone needs to look in the attic or the basement to see if the wall-let between the kitchen and (I'm guessing) dining area could be removed. If you're having someone look at that, the wall between ?dining area? and hall could go too as well as it's doorway into the kitchen.

The house won't care what style of cabinets you use. Decide if you are a mid-century modern person, or a modern-modern or a colonial or a british subject or an asian chef and just go for it.

If you are able to remove the wall to the left it really might add more space and help things flow more. You might then be able to add an island as well. Here are a few of our kitchen designs that might help you move forward:
