I successfully moved mine in the fall when it was dormant. Just as important as sunlight, not planting too deeply is critical to flowering.

I moved 12 established Peonies last year between Sep 27-Oct 15. I did it in stages because of the size of the undertaking (Peonies have huge root systems). Their leaves were already changing colour, but they were not dormant yet. This year I didn't notice any difference in performance between those moved earlier and those moved later. They all bloomed much more scarcely though, what is normal. Established Peonies don't like being moved.

I agree with this saying. i know its best to move peonies in fall but our fall season is super short. I moved two hibiscus bushes last summer which probaby isnt recommended but they lived with extra water and shade for a couple weeks.

If your peonies weren't blooming they could have been planted too deep. When you transplant them, consider raising them up a little.

Thanks Laurie! We have two that haven't been blooming since transplanted 20 yrs ago. We are going to transplant them higher. We kept waiting for them to 'recover' and they never bloomed in their new location.

I live in Portsmouth, Virginia, and have about a dozen peony rhizomes I relocated a peony bush from my mother’s home in NY before I sold it. When I brought them here, I kinda planted them in a hurry. Now, I want to replant them to permanent locations. My question is, does anyone have any knowledge and experience in when and where the best locations to place these plants are?
