Cat people, help me please!

This is a long story but here's the cat part: In the evenings, I will feed an indoor/outdoor cat while the family is on vacation. Short story, they are the worst family ever with pets. Serious neglect, apathy and indifference. I am looking for a rescue for the dog. Family doesn't care.

The cat usually comes in at night but I will go over at 6 and the neighbor may not come over until 10 in the morning to feed the dog and cat.

Should I leave the cat out all night? The dog will be out all night and sleeps in the partially opened garage.

If you don't have to, and the cat is happy to be in your house, I can't see the downside of you keeping him for the night. Are he and the dog buddies, likely to bed down together? That's the only reason I can really see to leave him out.

Thank you bestyears but it's for the week and the animals will stay at their house. They have workers coming in so I imagine the cat will sneak out in the morning early.

Oh, I'm sorry, I was confused. Are you asking if you should leave the cat in the neighbor's house for the night? Yes, and the dog too! You could put a note on the door, "Please don't let the cat out," but most likely it will return for breakfast anyway.

I wish I could leave the dog in the house but she's never been in. And one reason why I am looking for a rescue.

They allowed this to happen to her, this is from fleas and living outside. Very first thing I did was put her on nextgard and then a vet appt. She is heartworm positive amongst many things.

I wish I could keep her, she loves me, and I her, but I can't have a third dog without a fence.

Wonderful, gentle loving personality. I go over every day to make sure she gets dinner.

I‘m so sorry Bumblebeez that you are caught in the middle if this. Does the pup at least have a memory foam pad or something to sleep on? I’ll say my prayers that everything the owners have put out into the world comes back to them tenfold.

😔 Oh my gosh, how heartbreaking. I so hope a rescue will help that poor sweet doggy. WTH is WRONG with people?!? Honestly, i would call the ASPCA, although I suppose right now the doggy is at least comfortable in that you are taking much better care of her right now than her owners did when they are home. She might be unhappier in a shelter. A rescue hopefully would find a foster who would be able to treat the heartworms.

And the HEAT!!! The poor thing, she is out in this terrible heat 24/7. 🥲

At the moment I am more concerned about finding a rescue before cold weather sets in although she does have the unheated garage.

If necessary I will build a dog house with a heating pad

How sad - I wouldn't leave the cat out but then I don't let my cats outside at all. Presumably the cat has a litter box inside. Slightly OT but it's situations like this that make me shake my head when some condemn people over the issue of declawing. I never hear anyone imposing any restrictions on people who let their cats run loose outside at risk of disease and death from vehicles and predators. In any case it breaks my heart when I hear about irresponsible pet owners.

She's also on pro-hart which is a 6-month slowkill treatment but it's not as effective as fast kill.

When I went over there tonight to feed her, the workmen who were there had closed the garage door with her in it. I was able to text the owner and she opened the door and I was able to get into the front door too and thankfully the dog had only been in the garage for 20 minutes or so. The cat came in at that point too and I don't think he had had anything to eat or drink the whole day.

A friend who has five dogs is going to doggie sit her everyday and I will bring her over there in the morning to his house and pick her up at night. I took her over there tonight and we did introductions and she had a wonderful time and learned how to use his doggie door immediately.

These people should be in prison for animal neglect. I would call the police.

That is just so sad. What is wrong with those people? Bless you for helping that poor dog, Bumbleeez. They should be charged with animal cruelty and never allowed to own pets!

Please call your local humane society and report these people. These pets deserve to live full time with someone who can properly care for them.

Unfortunately this is not a black and white situation. The cat and dog are best at this house with me going over there until I can find rescues. An 8-year-old dog with heartworm is not an easy rescue and reporting to the police or turning into the shelter, she'll be dead within a week. The shelters are also full with incredibly beautiful loving dogs. It's heartbreaking and I see it all the time in my Facebook feed.

I have called a trainer and want to get my dog who is aggressive with other dogs, not all though, calm so that I can bring this dog to my house for heartworm treatment.

I don't want to go into details here but the owner is paying the price with sickness and family upheavals, which is how I learned about the animals in the first place. I took a meal over and saw the dog.

I'm not understanding what you mean by finding rescues? You mean a good shelter for the dog or a new dog for you? :) Oh, unless they make a heating pad that a dog won't chew, you might find another option. Hay is good.

First things first. I'm hoping both cat and dog have a lot of dry dog food? If so, get two bowls and fill them with kibble, not as much for the cat, but enough to munch on all day. Put the cat's bowl up high someplace and show it where it is.

Get a big bowl of water. This way you won't have to worry about whether or not they're eating.

Do you know the neighbor well enough to have a gentle talk about the shape of the dog and that he has heartworms? The dog doesn't go inside their house at all? Pffft. Not good if that's the case. He needs to be rehomed.

Oakly, there are organizations that specialize in fostering and re homing dogs. Often they will not take dogs with heartworm. There is a huge network that transports dogs to the North for adoption as there are not enough dogs there for adoption.

It's a good system but takes months.

Bumblebeez, I have been in your shoes a few times. It is not an easy walk. Wishing you all the best.....

Thank you Bublebeez for being such a generous and loving person who stepped in to care for these animals when they needed help. I'm sorry I don't have any cat knowledge to offer, but it sounds like you are doing everything you possible can to help and I wanted you to know that I think you are so wonderful for doing this. I hope one of the local rescue organizations can find someone that can take the poor dog in. Wishing you and the animals the best of luck.

It breaks my heart to see animals being brought into people’s homes only to be neglected and /or abused. The only good thing in that poor dog’s life is your kindness and concern. I do hope you find a home for that sweet boy.

Thinks have gotten Byzantine, however, all will be fine. I won't elaborate. I have also realized I am PASSIONATE about this area, good animal care and mainly dogs, but all animals, and many people are not. Good, normal, everyday people we intermingle with and know don't care.

An update, tonight the neglected dog came home with me and the owner signed a surrender form. Whew!

She will go on heartworm treatment then to a rescue if I can't find a local family.

So glad to hear the good news! Bumble, you are truly a gift to the animal world. Thanks for caring about the ones who can't care for themselves.

Good work, good heart, Bumble. Thank you.

Oh Bumble, I've been on the verge of a good cry all day, and now you've gone and tipped me right over the edge.

What is the status of the cat? I understand indoor outdoor, but they should not be out at night. Especially if he/she no longer has her dog buddy.

I have mostly stayed out of the cat situation although he bonded with me as I probably am the first person who has ever given him wet food. He is allowed inside throughout the day and at night but they are indifferent. He has a litter box and food bowl inside.

The poor dog has heartworm to where she is coughing quite a bit.

    Meds get ordered today.

I was on the verge of going to animal control and had documented everything scrupulously.

God bless you. I've been there with neighbors who would go off for weeks and leave a cat outside, summer and winter. At the time, I had a Russian blue and I thought he got outside as one was sitting on my outside patio. I got a towel, went out with food and gently lifted him up, and took him inside when turned around and saw my real cat Sooty. Our houses are far apart and I never knew the cat was pure bred. Long story short, after calling every source for animal rescues who said no, I made a choice I don't regret. My MIL visited and she loved him. She took him to her home far away and loved him until the day he died. Do I regret doing that, NO I actually saw the husband of the family using a hockey stick and hitting the cat with it. Thank God they moved.

Depends on the area, but I once lived in a rural area and saw a cat get nabbed by an owl. I will never leave a cat outside at night again, no matter how much they want to go out. So many things can happen to them. We would bring our cat in at night when we had one growing up, but sometimes we couldn't find her or would forget. Luckily if she wanted to be let in she was not shy about letting us know. Usually she would come in at night but sometimes she was darn difficult to find. Now I live on such a busy road I would never ever have an outdoor cat period. So much more traffic on the roads than when I was a kid . . . but even then, cats got hit by cars all the time. We lost one to a car, devastating. Same deal, we were gone and the cat got out.
